  • “Upholding the Numbered Treaties and Rejecting the Indian Act: A Plea to John A. MacDonald from a Concerned Citizen” Dear John A. MacDonald, I am writing to you from the future, a time where

    Letter  to John A. MacDonald
Share your understanding of treaties, the Indian Act, reserve systems, and related contemporary issues.
    Directions:
Imagine you can send a letter back in time to the first Prime Minister of Canada, John A. Macdonald, at the time of the negotiation of the Numbered Treaties, and the making of the Indian Act (1876).
The goal of your letter is to persuade the PM to ensure that the Numbered Treaties are honoured, as they were negotiated orally, and to ensure the Indian Act doesn’t become law.
You will use at least one example of issues with the Indian Act, and/or of the reserve system (i.e. housing crisis, boiling water crisis, poverty, cycle of dependency, education, etc.) as way to persuade him.
You may point out what biases he may have and attempt to persuade him to consider the Indigenous perspective and consider the value of Indigenous ways of being, knowing, and doing (i.e. care of the land, learn from other cultures, unique ways to grow economy, mutually benefit).
Personalizing the letter and/or being creative is encouraged as a way to persuade and to allow for relatability. For example, you could share something from your life, identity, or relation to land as part of your persuasive letter. You might also use humour, or tell a story.  Presentation Options:

  • Title: Analyzing Interview Transcripts: Creating a Code Book and Identifying Patterns and Relationships

Return to the “Developing Research Questions Assignment”.  With interview transcripts in hand, create a code book for interviews.
Look at the ways people coded their respective interviews. See
if there is agreement on major and minor codes. Discuss the different kinds of stories each
coding scheme might tell. Cut and sort by major and minor codes looking for patterns,
relationships, further categorizations. Make note of analytical findings. Hold onto these clumps
of coded data for a future exercise.
An example has been attached as well.

  • Title: Analysis of Historical Crime Data for Drug-Related Offenses in the United States: A Focus on Law Enforcement

For this assignment, you can choose to either create a PowerPoint presentation or write a report depicting your analysis of historical crime data for a specific category of crime or criminal issue. Focus your research on one component of the criminal justice system (i.e., law enforcement, courts, or corrections). The data and charts you develop may be used in your Final Paper.
    For this assignment, you will
Present national data and trends based on the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting and/or the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ Data Collection: National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS); another comparable nationally recognized database, such as The Campus Safety and Security Data Analysis Cutting Tool on the U.S. Department of Education’s The Tools You Need for Campus Safety and Security Analysis; or, for an international perspective, you may present data available at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime’s Crime & Criminal Justice web page.
Present graphical statistical crime data for a specific category of crime from three comparably sized cities, counties, or states from three different regions of the country (e.g., Indianapolis, Austin, and San Francisco, etc. This information should be found on official government websites.)
Develop questions you would like to address based on the data you retrieved. (Note: You do not have to answer these questions for this assignment.) What crime prevention programs or initiatives are available to potentially address the crime or criminal justice issue? (Note: You are working through Step 18 in Crime Analysis for Problem Solvers in 60 Small Steps.)
If you choose to create a PowerPoint presentation, your PowerPoint presentation must be a minimum of 10 slides long and must graphically display the statistical data developed for three comparable cities, counties, or states. Your presentation must incorporate national statistics for comparison. Your assessment may be in bullet or paragraph format and must be provided in the notes section of the presentation. Make sure you standardize your data (usually 1:1000; 1:10,000; or 1: 100,000) and incorporate the scale in a key for each chart.
You may wish to include visual enhancements in your presentation. These may include appropriate images, a consistent font, appropriate animations, and transitions from content piece to content piece and slide to slide. (Images should be cited in APA Style as outlined by the University of Arizona Global Campus Writing Center. Students may wish to use the following “Finding Non-Copyrighted Images for Presentations” guide for assistance with accessing freely available public domain and/or Creative Commons licensed images.) Top Ten Slide Tips, PowerPoint 2010 and the Simple Rules for Better PowerPoint Presentations web pages provide useful assistance with creating successful PowerPoint presentations.
If you choose to write a report, graphically display the statistical data developed for three comparable cities, counties, or states. Incorporate national statistics for comparison. You must include an introduction that presents the focus of the project for analysis. Your report must be at least five pages in addition to the title page and references page. Your assessment may be in bullet or paragraph format below the graphic display. Make sure you standardize your data (usually 1:1000; 1:10,000; or 1: 100,000) and incorporate the scale in a key for each chart.

  • Title: Management, Organization, and Leadership in Criminal Justice Organizations: Addressing Private Funding and Ethical Issues

We have learned about organizational structures, management, and leadership. Write an essay in which you expand on the following topics:
Begin with an Introduction Paragraph that describes the purpose of the paper, which is to address management, organization, and leadership in relation to criminal justice organizations. What are the main differences between management and leadership? How do managers and leaders have different roles in criminal justice organizations, and what can their impact be?
Explain the importance of private funding. How does this affect the criminal justice agency? What could occur if an agency is unable to fund initiatives.
Identify and discuss at least two ethical issues that agencies could experience. What are some steps that agencies could implement to address ethical issues?
Please remember that the paper should rely on Intermediate headings (fully left-justified) to present the information listed above. (Examples: Management, Leadership, Private Funding, Ethical Issues)
CONCLUSION: Every paper must include a conclusion. The Conclusion should include the heading, Conclusion, and must provide a summary of your findings as well as solutions based on best practices today (solutions you provided and validated within your paper). The Conclusion heading is centered above the paragraph.
Your essay must be submitted in MS WORD format and at least two pages in length. The title and reference pages do not count toward the page requirement. Therefore, the minimum length for the paper is four pages. Your paper must include the APA required headings (Introduction, intermediate headings, and a Conclusion); as well as the Reference heading for the Reference Section.
The word, Introduction, may be used for the introduction heading or you may use the title of the paper as the introduction. However, please remember that the title of the paper must relate directly to the subject of the assignment, not the assignment unit number. In other words, Unit III is not to be used as the title of your paper. The title may read: Organizational Structures, management, and Leadership, or something similar. The Introduction heading is centered above the starting paragraph.
Your paper must include intermediate headings that are fully left justified and must relate to the bullet points listed above. Please remember that the heading, Conclusion, is the last heading in the main body of the paper. The conclusion should provide a review of your discussion as well as a review of the applicable best practices in the criminal justice system today.
You must use at least two peer-reviewed empirical or academic sources to support your essay; at least one source should originate from the CSU Online Library. Wikipedia, news websites, and other similar sources are not considered as empirical sources. All sources used must have APA Style citations and references. Please refer to the following attachments for further guidance.

  • “Leading with Authenticity: Exploring the Values and Beliefs that Shape Who I Am”

Kouzes and Posner (2006) wrote that “People always want to know some things about us — the person doing the leading before they’re going to become the people doing the following. They want to know about the person behind the mask of position. They want to know what gives us the confidence to think that we can actually pull this off” (p.93). Your values and beliefs should be part of your answer if asked “who are you?” (Kouzes and Posner, 2006, p. 98).

  • Title: The Production of Knowledge in Criminology and Criminal Justice Sciences: Politics, Conflicts, and Theoretical Integration

    in 250 words,
Describe how knowledge is produced in criminology and criminal justice sciences. In particular, draw from examples in the readings and video. How do politics enter into considerations of what constitutes “science,” and what is advanced as “appropriate?” Discuss the debate over criminological knowledge that was created by the conflict between Edwin Sutherland and the Gluecks. Drawing on the article by Hughes, how has research in the social sciences been used to marginalize entire classes of people? Provide examples. Is this currently happening in criminology and criminal justice sciences?
in 250 words: Explain the concept of theoretical integration. How does it differ from the notion of theoretical absorption? Carefully review Professor Elliott’s integrated theoretical model of delinquency. What are the 3 micro-criminological theories that he combines in order to more fully explain juvenile delinquency and crime? Describe each of these three 3 constituent explanations. Provide examples from the video that helped you understand his integrated approach.

  • Title: “A Critical Analysis of Organized Crime Depicted in Goodfellas”

Choose  the movie goodfellas that is primarily about organized crime or gang activity (a list of some potential choices is provided at the end of this document). Watch the content with a critical eye. You are expected to provide a critique and analysis of the piece primarily through the context of how organized crime is being depicted.
Some potential information to include and questions to consider:
Which ‘type’ of organized crime is being depicted (Mafia, street gangs, cartels, etc.)?
What is the setting of the piece? When and where does it take place?
Who is it about? Who are the protagonists/antagonists?
Who is target audience for this piece?
What level(s) of organized crime are being portrayed? Is it about the ‘bosses’ or leaders of an OC group or is it about low-level members (or both)?
Provide a brief overview of the plot (I don’t need a comprehensive beat-by-beat retelling of the story, just a quick summary about what it’s about).
What is the central conflict of the piece?
In your estimation, how accurate is the piece in depicting organized crime? Are there parts that are more accurate or less accurate? What does it get ‘right’ and/or ‘wrong”?
What is being exaggerated or embellished? Use what we have learned in the course to help your decision.
Is the piece based on real people/events? Is it based on semi-fictional people/events? Is it based on mostly fictional people/events? How accurate are these portrayals?
How is organized crime being depicted? Is it glamourized or sensationalized? Is it
‘realistic’? Raw? Violent? Does it depict any consequences to OC involvement? Does the piece want us to root’ for the criminals and for them to succeed or are they depicted as villains?
Do the OC groups depicted conform to the various characteristics of the ‘Schneider taxonomy’ (as discussed in lecture)? How so?
Assuming you didn’t know anything about the organized crime being portrayed, what conclusions or lessons would the film/show teach you about OC? How accurate are these lessons to reality?
What was the major theme, idea, or message of the piece?
How are the police, law enforcement, or criminal justice system being portrayed and depicted?
How are gender and notions of gender (masculinity, femininity, etc.) being depicted in the piece? What gender qualities are seen as valuable, successful, attractive, etc. within the context of the organized crime being portrayed?
Does the piece contain any stereotypes or tropes in its depictions of its characters or organized crime more generally? Are these stereotypes/tropes potentially misleading or harmful toward certain groups or demographics?
Why do you suppose this piece was as successful or popular as it was?
Do you have any other ideas or thoughts about the depiction of organized crime in the piece and how it might shape people’s perspectives or understandings?

  • Title: The Blue Wall of Silence: Examining Police Subculture and the Impact on Ethical Behavior and Leadership

Consider Frank Serpico, New York City Police Detective (Retired).
In the 1970’s, Detective Serpico “broke the ranks” and exposed police corruption in the New York City Police Department. As a result, he was shot in the face, and it is his belief that he was set up by his colleagues — officers charged with the protection of the citizenry. Do you believe the subculture is so strong that an officer who is considered to be a “rat” or a “snitch” will be ostracized? Would this officer not be afforded backup or assistance in a crisis situation? Explain your response.
Congressman Charles Rangel and Mayor Rudolph Giuliani both speak of the “blue wall of silence.”
Please describe what you think is meant by the blue wall of silence? Does it truly exist or is this just a perception? Would a police officer with very strong morals, values, and ethics fail to expose officer wrongdoing? Does the subculture constrain the officer’s individual values?
In Hebrews 13:17, the Bible states, “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.” What must effective leaders do to ensure they have faithful followership?
