    The Final Research Paper builds on itself throughout the course. Each week is broken down below.
    Week 1:
    Select one of the Department of Homeland Security goals of your choice. This must be a stand-alone statement following your introduction and thesis (e.g., DHS Goal: Secure U.S. Borders and Approaches, or Secure Cyberspace and Critical Infrastructure, etc.).
    Explain a current issue for your research. (Note the approved list of topics. You may select one of these, or select one of your own. Note your instructor must approve your issue to be addressed in your Final Research Paper.)
    Explain the issues, threats, or hazards that are affecting the resolution of the vulnerabilities. Identify any constitutional issues in play.
    Week 2:
    Begin your research for your Final Research Paper. It is recommended that you start your research by identifying a Research Starter for your topic in the University of Arizona Global Campus Library.
    Note the “Research Starter” should address the common issues for the topic. Note the bibliography is a good place to identify additional resources for your paper. This should set you up for success in writing your Final Research Paper.
    Week 3:
    Finalize your six credible references. Note two of these must be scholarly and found in the University of Arizona Global Campus Library.
    Sketch out the outline for your Final Research Paper.
    Week 4:
    Complete your research, and complete your first rough draft of your Final Research Paper.
    Week 5:
    Complete the writing of your Final Research Paper. Conduct your final reviews.
    Spell-check your paper.
    Review your APA formatting (Note the APA Formatting Sample PaperLinks to an external site. posted the first week of class, and review the feedback from your instructor for previous assignments).
    Read your paper out loud to catch grammatical issues.
    Submit your Final Research Paper for grading.

    Identify the DHS goal and issue that you will address in the Final Research Paper.
    Summarize the various points of view that frame the homeland security issue, threat, or hazard that leads to a vulnerability.
    Describe the various roles and responsibilities of the various levels of government with respect to the issue under review.
    Explain your personal position on how the Department of Homeland Security should address vulnerability using mitigation, prevention, and preparedness techniques.

  • Title: Annotated Bibliography and Study Introduction: Exploring the Effects of Social Media on Adolescent Mental Health

    nnotated Bibliography: Section one should contain an annotated bibliography with five peer-reviewed
    academic articles that relate to the proposed study. These peer-reviewed articles must be (1) empirical
    studies and (2) published in academic journals. Keep in mind that other sources outside of these
    requirements can be used for the brief introduction. This section should be written like a standard
    annotated bibliography (citation and summary) and all citations should be in APA-7 format. Students

    Study Introduction and Description: Section two should begin with a brief introduction to your proposal.
    This brief (1-2 paragraphs) introduction should include pertinent background information for your study,
    setting up your proposal nicely. Any information not deemed general knowledge requires a citation,
    please provide an in-text citation if the source is already included in the annotated bibliography or
    provide the full citation in a reference page at the end of your proposal. This section should include 2 – 5
    additional sources beyond what is included in the annotated bibliography. This section should also
    include your research question(s) and hypothesis(es), if applicable. When including a hypothesis,
    students should identify if the hypothesis is non-directional or directional and the directionality of the
    hypothesis. Last, this section should include the identification and explanation of the study’s purpose
    (exploratory, explanatory, evaluation or descriptive as well as pure or applied), time dimension (if
    longitudinal, which type), and either a quantitative or mixed methods approach.
    **For the draft – if the hypothesis is directional, the directionality is not needed. We have not discussed

    70-80 points (Excellent): The paper consists of an original response to the question. The paper provides information that is original and relevant to the question. Student uses professional vocabulary and correct grammar and spelling.
    50-69 points (Above Average): The student provides an answer to question, which is mostly relevant or appropriate but that may also contain some relatively minor misapplication of concepts/ideas from class material. Student uses professional vocabulary and correct grammar and spelling, for the most part, though there may be a few minor mistakes.

    Overall, you will be writing a threat and partnership summary brief to give to a senior leadership member at your security organization. In this summary, you will explain the actions that you have taken and how these actions are meant to remediate the threat and associated issues at hand.  
    NOTE that you MUST use resources from this course, in addition to outside resources to support your contentions.  Also, you must ensure your written responses are distinguishable from each other and follow the same sequence and order in which the questions are presented.
    Specifically, you are to address the following:
    Identify a real- world internal OR external threat to a selected business entity or private company.  This threat could have occurred in real life or could have been something the company or entity mitigated against. Consider both physical and cyber threats, or a blend of the two.
    Fully describe the threat, its impact, and how you as a security manager would coordinate the various internal and external organizations and partnerships to best respond, assess, address, manage, and mitigate the threat.
    Discuss in detail which organizations would you lean on internally and what would you task them with specifically?
    Discuss how might you solicit feedback and partnerships from external organizations to improve your security posture?

  • “Exploring the Psychological and Behavioral Factors of Individual Terrorists: A College-Level Research Paper”

    For this midterm assignment, you will write a college-level research paper describing the psychological and behavioral factors of individual terrorists (i.e. recruits and suicide bombers; not terrorist leaders).
    Note: you only need to research and discuss individual psychological and behavioral factors in this paper.     Students will follow the current APA Style as the sole citation and reference style used in written work submitted as part of coursework.
    Points will be deducted for the use of Wikipedia or encyclopedic-type sources. It is highly advised to utilize books, peer-reviewed journals, articles, archived documents, etc.

  • “The Impact of Drug Bans on Recidivism Rates in the United States”

    :  Chapter 7 of the textbook, “Crime Control Through Legislation,” contains a discussion of America’s “drug problem” and laws designed to limit or ban the use of specific psychoactive substances (see sections titled “Drug Bans,” “The Scope of America’s Drug Problem,” and “Drug Ban Problems”).  The federal report 2018 Update on Prisoner Recidivism: A 9-Year Follow-up Period (2005-2014) contains some discussion of the release and recidivism of persons incarcerated for drug-related offenses.
