W2: The Constitution
The Constitution
The Constitution is the framework for the organization of the United States government and for the relationship of the federal government with the States, citizens, and all people within the United States. The Constitution has been amended twenty-seven times, the last occurring in 1992.
To assist in better understanding the Constitution, please answer the following question: Of the Constitutional amendments we are addressing in this class (Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, and Eighth), which one is most important? Why?  There is obviously no wrong answer, so your analysis in support of the amendment you choose is key.
Why is this week’s discussion so important? Sadly, a high percentage of Americans do not know basic information about the Constitution.
Here are some examples:
“What is the supreme law of the land?” Seventy-percent of the 1,000 citizens polled by Newsweek could not answer the “Constitution.”
Sixty-one percent didn’t know that the length of a U.S. senator’s term is six years, 63 percent couldn’t name the number of Supreme Court justices on the bench (nine), and 86 percent didn’t know that 435 members fill the U.S. House of Representatives.
And finally, fifty percent could not name an amendment to the Constitution, and twenty percent said the Constitution has never been amended.

In this essay students are required to write about their own views on crime causation.
The purpose of this assignment is to encourage students to critically think about their own views on crime, crime causation, and how to prevent crime. By identifying and critically thinking about these issues, students will be able to assess the accuracy of their beliefs based on the course content, and will be able to measure the extent to which the course makes a difference in their “thinking about crime,” at the end of the session. A number of individual theoretical explanations for juvenile delinquency have been presented in the lesson and readings for this week. Some of these explanations focus on the personal characteristics of the juvenile, while others attribute delinquency to societal factors.
In your initial response, begin by discussing whether you believe personal or societal factors have the biggest influence on juvenile delinquency. Next, identify one specific personal characteristic or societal factor that you believe most accurately explains what contributes to juvenile delinquency. A minimum of 3 empirical peer reviewed journal articles testing the theory is required.

Students will write a scholarly paper that is a minimum of 8-10 pages in length (8-10 pages excluding the title page, abstract, and reference page) in proper APA style format.
References may be found in the APUS library or search engines such as Google Scholar.  The paper must include at least five peer-reviewed sources that cover your chosen topic from the list below. Keep in mind that 5 is the minimum.  A good quality research paper usually contains more than 10.  Sources should be as current as possible. Do not forget to use in-text citations to credit your sources.
The references used for your research need to be peer-reviewed/scholarly journals. These journals typically have the following characteristics:
1. a panel of experts reviews articles before they are accepted for publication;
2. a scholar or specialist in the field writes articles;
3. articles report on original research or experimentation;
4. are often published by professional associations;
5. utilize terminology associated with the discipline.
The use of newspapers, news magazines, and similar periodicals must be kept to a minimum and will be acceptable only as sources for supplementary information.
References like “Wikipedia,” “Psychology Today,” and “Court TV” are not primary sources, are not peer-reviewed (reviewed for empirical integrity, accuracy, and authenticity), and are not appropriate references for scholarly writing (with the possible exception of use for anecdotal background information).

The criminal law is constantly evolving.  In this assignment, you will research a legislative change that has occurred in either California or federal law within the last five years and author an essay regarding the change in the law.
In order to fulfill this assignment, you must do the following.
Identify a legislative change in California or federal criminal law that has occurred in the last five years. You may select any newly enacted legislation relating to the criminal law or any change to the existing state or federal criminal law.   Although you may find and select any new or changed law, some acceptable examples include the following:
