Criminologists have introduced a number of theories that attempt to explain why juveniles engage in acts of delinquency. Some of these theories focus on the social environment in which the juvenile resides while others believe the types of social interactions a juvenile has can influence their decision to engage in delinquency.
In your initial post, discuss whether you believe the theories related to one’s social environment or societal interactions best explain why juveniles engage in acts of juvenile delinquency. Next, select a theory out of these two groups that you believe best explain juvenile delinquency. Briefly describe the premise of the theory you selected, and then explain why you believe it most accurately explains why juveniles engage in acts of delinquency. 1. Plain View: 
You and your partner are working the midnight shift. You stop a car for having no taillights. The car is properly registered, and the male driver has a valid driver’s license and insurance. Your partner tells you this person “gives him a bad feeling” and subsequently orders him out of the car. Your partner searches the car and finds a handgun under the front seat; he arrests the driver. At the station, the serial number of the gun is run through the computer and a hit is received indicating the gun was used in a homicide. When confronted with this, the suspect confesses. Your partner, knowing the search was illegal, fears the evidence of the gun and confession will be inadmissible in court. Your partner says he is going to write in the report that the gun was in “plain view” and tells you to go along with this so a murderer will not be back on the street. What would you do? Explain your answer and provide support from the text.
2. The False Report
You and a senior officer are on routine patrol. You come across a juvenile whom you have repeatedly seen in and out of court. You personally know him to have been involved in a total of six property crimes. You are tired of seeing him go through the “revolving door” of justice. Your partner suggests you file a false report on him. After all, the kid’s “got to pay” for his actions. Right?

Choose a person who works in the CJ field and has a job you’re curious to learn more about or who experienced a situation on the job that you would like to know more about. For example, in a previous class, I had a student whose uncle resigned from his job as a correction officer because he refused to testify against his boss, who was accused of excessive use of force. The student asked about the situation itself and then zoomed out to explore his uncle’s thoughts about the work of a Rikers Island correction officer generally.  
Start by asking easy questions: the person’s job title, what they actually do on the job, how long they’ve been working in the field, and why they chose it. You might ask them about the pros and cons of the job, the pay, the potential for advancement, and what they like most and least about the job. You might want to ask them what advice they’d have for someone who wants to go into the field and whether they would make the same career choice if they were starting out. Make sure you include some analysis about what they told you. For example, what are your thoughts about what they said?

• You must include a copy of the news story you choose, this does not count towards your 5 page limit.
