Research one California Criminal Statute that was signed into law within the last 2 years.  Again, use a Criminal Statute.  This would be a law involving criminal law, evidence, etc.  Once you have your statute provide a discussion with the following information.  What is the name of the new law.  What code section may it be found (i.e. Penal Code, Evidence Code, etc.)  What is the stated intent of the new law?  Why do you think the new law was enacted?  What groups favored its passage?  What groups opposed the law?  Was there a specific incident or reason provided by the sponsor of the new law?  Do you think the new law will address the issue for which it was passed?  Explain your reasons.  What are some of the consequences that you predict may result from this new law (intended or unintended)?  How does the new law relate to issues that you have been studying in class?  The above questions are suggestions – feel free to broaden your discussion.

Select one of these topics and write an opinion piece as to why this type of crime might just be more dangerous to society than traditional blue collar crime. Not to worry if you are not very familiar with the concept of blue collar crime, we will cover the topic as we wend our way through the semester. Additionally, the trauma and stress associated with mental health disorders can lead to substance abuse and other maladaptive coping mechanisms, which can further increase the risk of criminal behavior (Widom, 1989).
Effectiveness of Mental Health Interventions:
Mental health interventions, such as counseling and therapy, have been shown to be effective in reducing recidivism rates among offenders with mental health disorders. For example, a study by Cullen and colleagues (2012) found that offenders who received mental health treatment had a significantly lower recidivism rate compared to those who did not receive treatment. Additionally, mental health interventions can help to address underlying issues such as trauma and substance abuse, which can contribute to criminal behavior (Lundquist et al., 2014). )
