Presentation Guidelines
Select a criminal-justice
related topic that interests you.
Browse through the variables in
the datasets we used throughout the semester (or the supplementary
resource listed in the DATASETS link in the main menu) and determine which
of these variables you can use to propose a research question (and
subsequent research hypothesis) related to your selected topic.
Read and summarize 3 (three) empirical studies that relate to
your topic
Study the levels of
measurements of the variables you have selected from the dataset(s) in
order to determine which statistical test covered in this class will be
most appropriate to use to test your proposed hypothesis.
Run the test in SPSS and save
the outputs (or recreate these outputs in Excel or Word)
Put together a short
PowerPoint presentation to discuss your proposed research and study
findings.
Your presentation should not be
longer than 5 minutes.
Presentation Outline
INTRODUCTION (1-2 slides)

presentation (what social phenomenon you are studying)

you have read in preparation for your presentation, and drawing from that
State your hypothesis and the
null hypothesis
ANALYSIS (2 slides)
Discuss your variables in the
hypothesis (independent, dependent, and their levels of measurement)
Discuss your analytical
strategy (i.e. what statistical test you are using and why)
Discuss the results (output
from SPSS) of your study
DISCUSSION AND
CONCLUSIONS (1 slide)
Discuss what you have concluded
based on the results found (i.e. whether you will reject or fail to reject
the null hypothesis) and what this tells you about the social phenomenon
you have examined.

“Responding to a Hack: A Plan for Identifying and Addressing Damage in a Digital Forensics Business”
For this discussion, consider the business you selected for your course project. Pretend that while you were working to perform a risk assessment on the organization the unthinkable occurred – you discover it has been hacked (and may, in fact, still be under attack). At this moment, you have no idea how long this has been going on, the level of damage, the persistence of the hack, and what (if anything) has been compromised. You have learned that some hackers may gain access to network resources and stay relatively inactive until there is something of value to steal or exploit. Other hackers seek to embarrass or steal quickly, hoping to benefit immediately from the access gained. You do not know which type of situation you have, what type of hacker(s) you are dealing with, if it is a lone instance, or if there are multiple exploits across your organization’s vast network.
Now consider you found a way to answer at least some of these questions quickly. While you may not have all the answers, you have identified some characteristics of this hack and need a plan to move forward. Moving forward includes isolating all access and compromised systems, identifying hacking methods (what was successful and what was not), and determining if the hack is a compromise that must be reported per the governance required of your type of business or industry.
Create a basic plan of how you would identify the extent of the damage/access/breach.
Who/what has hacked your organization?
What was the goal?
What can you do to immediately triage the organization’s network?
What specific steps can be taken?
Who should be notified?
Do you alert your customers/patients/students/stakeholders?

The Justification of Use of Force by Police Officers and the Clash of Constitutional Rights: An Analysis of Criminal Defenses and the Fairness of the Common Law Defense of Necessity
Introduction
A controversial issue today in the American legal system is the justification of the use of force by police officers, given the actions and conduct of citizens. In this assignment, you will explore the requirements for use of force, constitutional rights pursuant to the Bill of Rights when it comes to free speech, and criminal defenses justifying actions.
Instructions
Write a 2-3 page paper in which you:
Specify the key requirements for police officers in determining the lawfulness of the use of force in making an arrest and what is meant by “reasonableness.”
Evaluate how free speech rights clash with the rights of others and the need for public order today.
Argue for or against the regulation of the First Amendment when it comes to speech that could or might incite “imminent lawless action or conduct.”
Analyze the defenses within today’s criminal law system.
Evaluate the fairness of the common law defense of necessity when citizens use deadly force.
Use at least three sources to support your writing. Choose sources that are credible, relevant, and appropriate. Cite each source listed on your source page at least one time within your assignment. For help with research, writing, and citation, access the library or review library guides.

Title: Examining the Use of Unnecessary Brute Force by Police Officers: A Descriptive Research Proposal
For your class project, you will write a descriptiveresearch proposal. Since this is a proposal, you will NOT conduct research, but you will write a proposal for research you are “hypothetically” proposing to conduct. We will work on this project in phases, throughout this course.
Before beginning this assignment, read the Module 1 Part 1 Power Point!
Module 1 part 1 PP (assign 1 info).pptx
Research Question
You begin your research with a research question. It is best to write your research question as an open-ended question. To do so, start your question with “what is” or “what are.”
For this assignment, you need to submit the following pages:
Page 1: APA formatted “student” title page
Page 2: Write a research question (for a descriptive research project) for one of the topics on p. 10 (Box 1-1). This does not need to be the topic you will use for your proposal. You do not need to decide on your topic until Module 2.
Follow this assignment template
