  • Title: “Miscommunication in Everyday Life”

Hi everyone, there are two parts to this discussion board.  Part 1 is due by Wednesday, and part 2 is due by Sunday. (No later than 11:59 PM)
Part 1: Due by WEDNESDAY, no later than 11:59 PM
For the discussion board this week, please share at least TWO situations where you have had miscommunication occur in your life.  Please identify at least one (or more) factors that could have contributed/caused the miscommunication.  (Culture, age etc)  Click reply when you are ready to respond.  After that, you will be able to see other student responses.
Example post: (You would need two examples here) When I was younger, I started to play baseball.  I was really young and had an intense coach who yelled at the team that when an umpire calls you out, you have to get off the field.  I ran to my dad concerned and said “I don’t think I can play with vampires, this is too scary.” In my young mind, I heard vampire, not umpire and was terrified.  Obviously my age was a factor here in the miscommunication.  True story by the way! 🙂

  • Title: Crafting a Civic Identity in New York City: Exploring Personal Values, Community Issues, and the Impact of Gentrification

New York City civic engagement extra credit
    Question 1:
A key step in crafting your civic identity is to figure out how your values and identity connect to civic issues that matter to you. The core elements of your story of self probably help explain why some issues that appear in public debates are more meaningful to you than others. But we’ll start just by asking you to name the civic issues that matter to you–go ahead and provide your answers again to questions 1 and 2, and then see if you can add an answer to the third question. How can you define or pursue your issues in ways that take the focus from “I” to “we” and to the question of what is good for a community or in the public interest?
    The 10 Questions
Why does it matter to me?
    How much should I share?
How do I make it about more than myself?
    Where do we start?
How can we make it easy and engaging for others to join in?
How do we get wisdom from crowds?
How do we handle the downside of crowds?
Are we pursuing voice or influence or both?
How do we get from voice to change?
    How can we find allies?
Provide a response to each of the 10 questions above (attached is an example of a changemaker biography for your reference). The submission should be a minimum of 500 words in length. Submit the assignments as a Word document or PDF.
    Question 2:
Compare what matters to the authors of the Declaration and what matters to you and why. Are there similarities? Differences?
The submission should be a minimum of 150 words in length. Submit the assignments as a Word document or PDF.
    Question 3:
Your task in this assignment is to define your community for someone who has never met you and is unfamiliar with where you live. Your definition must include details related to geography, environment, and people and an explanation for why you define your community the way you do.
Why is gentrification important to study? Explain how gentrification can be both positive and negative for society. What groups of people may benefit from it and why? What groups of people might be most negatively influenced by gentrification and why? If gentrification continues to accelerate, what do you think the neighborhood you are studying will look like in 20 years? Who will live there? Explain.
What problems, outcomes, or issues is your neighborhood facing as a result of gentrification?  Explain each.
The submission should be a minimum of 500 words in length. Submit the assignments as a Word document or PDF.

  • “The Impact of French Secularism on Muslim Women’s Identity and Expression: Examining the Relationship between State and Religion” “The Impact of French Secularism on Muslim Women: Examining the Evolution of Laws and Resistance to Religious Expression in Public”

For your research topic: Choose a topic that is linked to our class theme, which is examining the relationships between citizens and their nation, nation-state, and/ or state institutions. This could include groups both recognized and not recognized by nation-states and/or the international community. The purpose of your paper is to examine their relationship to the state, how this relationship is produced, and how they question or push back against it, if any. How do they craft their identity? How is it produced or performed? Decide what avenue of national production you will examine: music, art, laws, poetry, sports, education, etc.
The final paper should be a research paper based on original and thorough research about a topic relevant to our class material. Length should be between 3,000 and 3,750 words (roughly 12-15 pages), double-spaced in 12-point font (which does not include the Works Cited). Your paper should comprehensively analyze a focused question beyond simply narrating events or summarizing information.
Original research: Your final paper should include a mix of both primary and secondary sources. Secondary sources must be scholarly (articles must be from peer-reviewed journals, either print or electronic), just as in the research proposal. Your research paper will address your research questions and make an argument based on your questions. Much of your analysis and argument will focus on primary and secondary sources. While you will also analyze the secondary sources, those will help you more in providing context for your primary sources or framing the critical issues in your essay. You need to engage with the arguments in your secondary sources and how those fit your interpretation of your primary sources. Use web sources sparingly unless you access electronic journals through the library’s system. Web sources are generally inappropriate for a scholarly paper unless you access primary sources. Most papers will incorporate anywhere from eight to fifteen sources but must include both primary and secondary sources. I would encourage you to have at least two primary sources. Do not group your sources by category, but provide a list alphabetized by author or, if there is no author, by title.
Argument: Your argument should center on your sources and what they tell you about your topic. How do your sources help you address your research questions and make an argument about
your topic of choice? Your primary sources should speak to your central argument. Most of the paper will analyze your primary and secondary sources to make your argument. An argument involves claiming a specific topic that you support with your
sources. The most compelling arguments are generated from your interpretation of the evidence/sources you find. Find your meaning in your sources, given those you examine. Some are debatable or contestable and often examine relationships or interactions; they go beyond pro/con viewpoints. That is too superficial for most intellectual arguments.
Source Documentation: All sources must be documented appropriately following MLA/APA or Chicago guidelines described in the Purdue OWL on D2L. All information in the paper from other sources must be documented with in-text citations. This includes both paraphrased information and direct quotations.
    Part of My Research Proposal:
    For
my research paper, I chose to examine the impact of French secularism and how
it affects Muslim women’s identity and expression. French secularism, often
referred to as laïcité, has been deeply rooted in French identity since the
1905 law separating the church from the state. This law aims to exclude
religion from public life so that the state remains neutral and religious
practices do not compromise civic duties. However, these principles have been
the center of heated debates, especially about religious expressions in public.
At the heart of this debate are Muslim women who choose to wear hijabs or other
Islamic clothing, like the abaya, publicly expressing their religious identity.
    French
secularism, considered the foundation of France’s moral society, has led to the
creation of numerous laws and regulations banning or forbidding any expression
of religion in the public, particularly in schools and other public
institutions. The 2004 ban on conspicuous religious symbols in public schools
and the 2010 law prohibiting wearing face-covering veils are two extreme
examples of the laïcité’s commitment on excluding ‘religion’ from the public.
These two laws affect Muslim women attending schools in France, considerably
because they strip them of their ability to wear any religious symbols and
    fully express their religious identity.
    Research
    Questions:
    ·
How do French secular policies influence the
identity and expression of Muslim women in France?
    ·
How do Muslim women resist and negotiate
    these policies in France?
    This
research paper explores the relationship between secularism and religious
expression in France. By focusing on Muslim women, my paper will offer insights
into how state policies shape personal identities and how individuals navigate
and resist these influences. It would provide greater insight into the dynamics
between national identity, secularism, and religious differences in today’s
    nation-states.
Feedback was to examine the 1905 law and the evolution of the laws and see how they have come to target Muslim Women in France.

  • Title: Speaker Critique and Evaluation

For this assignment, you are going to evaluate the verbal and nonverbal aspects of a speaker’s presentation. An evaluation form is provided below to help guide your assessment of the content (what is being said) and the delivery (how it is said).
You have the option to go out and observe a live event, or you can watch one of the speeches from the Library provided below. The links will take you to important speeches from history.
    John F. Kennedy—Inaugural Address
Martin Luther King Jr.—I Have a Dream
    Fred Rogers—Address to Congress
    John McCain—Return to the Senate
    Emma Gonzalez—March for Our Lives

Do the following, to complete this assignment:
Print out the Speaker Critique Form (linked above), and familiarize yourself with the elements of the presentation that you will be assessing.
View a presentation, a lecture, a sermon, or some sort of public speaking event. A live event would be great, but one of the Library Video Options (linked above) is acceptable.
During the presentation, complete the Speaker Critique Form; consider including notes to help you remember specific details later.
Write a 2-page paper, using proper spelling and grammar, that addresses the following:
Provide an introduction describing who spoke, what they spoke about, and where you heard the presentation. If you chose to use a library video, be sure to clearly identify its title and provide a link to the specific video within the series.
After the introduction, talk about what parts of the content were done well and what the speaker could have done better. Address at least 2 different elements of content.
Next, talk about what parts of the delivery were done well and what the speaker could have done better. Address at least 2 different elements of delivery.
End with a concluding paragraph, giving your opinion about whether the speaker was effective or not. Explain your reasoning.

    About this Assignment
Effective intercultural communication requires an understanding of the various aspects of culture and how people respond to different cultures in a variety of settings. Beyond understanding concepts such as bias and stereotyping, effective communication includes the ability to understand the nuances of both verbal and non-verbal communication, how these are reflections of culture, and how strategies can be developed for more effective intercultural communication. For your final assignment, in a paper of approximately 2,500-3,000 words, address the prompts below using concepts you learned from the course to support your analysis.
    Project Prompt
Select a culture other than your own. Compare and contrast your selected culture with your own on these dimensions in terms of how they influence communication:
    Core values
    Religious belief systems
    Gender roles
    Verbal and non-verbal communication
    Communication context
Then, analyze how characteristics of both cultures influence communication in the following settings and identify the issues and opportunities that exist for each:
    Education
    Healthcare
    Business settings
Finally, formulate strategies for improving intercultural communication in these settings including the development of cultural intelligence (CQ)

  • Title: “Lost in Translation: Understanding Verbal Communication in Popular Media”

    Description:
For this assignment, you will create a slide presentation about words, their meanings, and the importance of context. This assignment will help solidify your understanding of effective verbal communication.
    Instructions:
Review the rubric for PowerPoint Presentations and the section of your textbook and in the learning activities for this module on verbal communication and language.
Think about a series, television program, or movie that people other than your friends, or co-workers, would have a hard time understanding, or getting the jokes.  For example, if you invited your parents or grandparents to join you and your friends for a movie night, which film would they have the most difficult time understanding the words, jokes, gags, pop cultural references, and would miss some or most of what the characters are saying to each other?  You could “flip the script” and consider a series or film that someone much younger than you just would not understand.
Pick a television series or movie that fits the description above. You are designing a PowerPoint presentation to help the audience members understand the characters and their verbal messages with clear explanations of what they actually mean.  You are the movie translator.
The presentation should be engaging and informative.
Connect your observations and experiences to a scholarly source like our textbook.
Remember that PowerPoint is available, for free, through your Office 365 Account
If for any reason you choose not to create a PowerPoint, you can write a two-three page paper, not including the title page and references page, about three-five points related to the topics listed above. Include an introduction paragraph, conclusion paragraph, and cited support.  .

  • Revisions to DB 2 for Milestone 2 Submission

hank you for reaching out!  You will make any remaining revisions to DB 2 and it will serve as Milestone 2 next week. For example, you listed the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS), as your formal agency in DB 2 AND in Milestone One and used the Chicago Public Library as your informal agency in DB 2 AND Milestone One. You will need to revise DB 2 to identify and correctly label new agencies before submitting it next week as your Milestone 2. Once you make
