  • Title: “Creating a Successful Public Relations Campaign for a Non-Profit Organization”

    Planning a Public Relations Campaign
Congratulations! You’ve just formed a new public relations firm. Your job is to handle public relations for a worthwhile non-profit organization. You must decide what kind of event your company will represent and publicize. (Note: This does not involve paying for any advertising—you must achieve all of your goals only through publicity practices.) Now you must plan the PR campaign—including which media you’ll target, what audience you want to reach, how much money you want to raise, and your campaign theme. You must have answers to the following questions.
    • The concept: On no more than one typed page, describe the concept of your campaign—how it differs from others in the area, what audience you hope to reach, which media you hope to reach and specific goals for the campaign.
    • Key staffers: Also on the single typed page (see the concept, above), provide the job titles in your company, as well as the name of your firm.
    • The need: Clearly state why your campaign is necessary. (Hint: Be specific and concrete. Avoid generic statements such as, “People will flock to this event,” or “People will donate to this cause.”)
    • User potential: Describe with as much detail as possible the kind of person who will donate to your cause or attend your event—including age, income level, single/married/family people, possible professions, typical interests, and other charities to which they contribute. How many people, realistically, do you expect will attend your event/give to your charity?
    • Campaign slogan: What will be the theme or slogan of your campaign, the jingle or phrase that will accompany all of your publicity? Develop a strong theme.
    • Campaign potential: What would be the best medium/media for your PR pitch: newspaper, TV, radio, magazine, Internet? Investigate the procedure for submitting media kits or news releases to the media. Be sure to check if the medium accepts photos or illustrations and the criteria for each. Propose what you think are good ways to approach different, specific media (newspaper, magazine, radio station, broadcast and cable TV). Don’t forget to consider alternative media (smaller, less well-known newspapers, radio stations or magazines that may specifically target part of your intended audience—parents’ magazines, for example, for a Children’s Day event). Can you use the Internet to gain some PR? What kind?

This is an assignment to research and explain a topic to the audience. A visual aid should be used to explain information better visually. Pictures aren’t bad; they just need to be useful.

  • Evaluating Media as a Cultural Forum: The Responsibility and Impact of Media Content Media has become an integral part of our daily lives, shaping our perceptions, beliefs, and values. With its powerful reach and influence, media has the ability to bring people

There are many debates about the best way to evaluate media content. While many focus on issues of aesthetics or narrative, media scholars Newcomb and Hirsch provide us with another way to evaluate media content – as an example of a cultural forum. The purpose of this assignment is to explore whether you feel media content has the responsibility to operate as a cultural forum for our society, as well as to identify contemporary examples of this cultural forum in the media landscape.
In lecture we discussed Newcomb & Hirsch’s concept of a cultural forum, which argues that media should operate as a space where important social issues are discussed and worked through. Since media texts can reach anyone in the country or world, they bring us together in ways that other communication cannot. And since media has this capability, Newcomb & Hirsch believe it should be used to address the issues that impact all of us. Remember, they think that the primary way for us to evaluate media should be in terms of how well that media text addresses social issues and concerns. While this is true for journalism to a degree, Newcomb and Hirsch believe that this criterion should be applied to all media texts, even the ones we use for escape or enjoyment.
Do you think media has an obligation to society to serve as this sort of space? What would that cultural forum look like in contemporary society? Are there media texts that currently operate according to this model, and if so, which ones? What makes these examples representative of a contemporary cultural forum? How does social media operate or not operate as a contemporary cultural forum?
Each essay should be at least two pages, double-spaced with one-inch margins.

  • “Exploring Cultural Differences: An Interview Analysis”

To complete this assignment, you will choose one person to interview who was raised in a culture different from your own.
You will conduct the interview by asking questions that help you to learn about the interviewee’s culture. You can create some of the interview questions on your own, but you will want to cover enough information to complete the Interview Analysis Assignment that follows the interview. Below you will see sample questions you can use or edit to fit your interaction.
Here are examples of questions you can use to get the interview started or to learn details about the interviewee’s background and culture. You do not have to use any or all of these questions, but make sure your questions are diverse and detailed enough to address the requirements in the Analysis Assignment.
Where did you grow up? What was it like to grow up there?
Did you live in a house, apartment, etc? Who lived with you?
Did you grow up in an urban or rural setting?
Who raised you? What were their roles in your family? Did your family and upbringing reflect the typical family in your culture?
What holidays, traditions, and foods symbolize your culture?
What were common industries or professions in your hometown or culture? Was there a major industry that employed most workers, or was it a diverse working community?
How does your culture view conflict? Do people openly engage in conflict? Is it viewed in a positive or negative way?
How does your culture feel about authority? Are elders respected unconditionally? Do people challenge authority?
Are people in your culture blunt or reserved with communication? Do people openly express ideas and feelings? Do people avoid direct expressions of verbal messages?
Is your culture community oriented or was your culture more focused on individuals or family groups? Did it feel like you were living inside a “big family” in your town or community? Did it feel like each family was separate and independent from others?
    Interview Assignment
Following the interview, you will create an essay that highlights areas of your interviewee’s culture. The essay should be two pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12-point font, and 1 inch margin all around. Include the interviewee’s name and phone number at the top of the essay.
Here are the questions to consider in your essay. Answer four of the six questions about your interviewee’s culture.
Was your interviewee from an individualistic or collectivistic culture? What information helped you to determine your answer?
Was your interviewee’s from a more masculine or feminine oriented culture? Why?
Was your interviewee from a high-context or low-context culture? Use examples to support your answer.
Did your interviewee come from a culture with a low-power or high-power distance? What information helped to you determine your answer?
Was your interviewee from a monochromatic or polychromatic culture? Use examples to support your answer.
Did your interviewee come from an explicit-rule culture or an implicit-rule culture? What information helped you determine your answer?
After choosing and answering four questions above, close out the body of your essay by answering this question.
How does knowing this information impact the way you would work with someone from this cultural background? Use an example to illustrate two specific tips/ideas that you’ve learned and could pass on to others who may work with someone from this culture.
