Shaping Leadership: A Reflection on Personal and Group Experiences Title: Exploring Leadership: A Collaborative Journey
this is a portfolio.
– 1500 words
Demonstrates use of practical/experiential knowledge and
demonstrates how ‘lay’ theories of leadership were changed and shaped by experiential activity – Describing how personal understanding of leadership has been shaped through interaction/discussion while working with your group members OR discussing your group members views of leadership and how its same/different to your leadership views.
Demonstrates conceptual theoretical knowledge and integrative thinking – This is referring to your understanding of leadership from a theoretical perspective (literature review on leadership theories) – you need to mention actual leadership theories and information on leadership, make sure you show you have done your research. Cite properly.
Sociocultural knowledge evident/negotiated meaning/can explain how lay theories of leadership changed based on others’ reactions/input – This is referring to your ability to working with a team to achieve outcomes. How well were you able to do this? What sort of issues/challenges did you face in these group activities and how did you overcome them? Better responses will be able to show growth and development in your understanding of leadership when working within teams.
Creation of new knowledge/critical reflection/changing and shaping of concepts evident – You need to show aspects of leadership for improvement in future personal and professional development – a self- evaluation of your learning process in the L&E unit and specific tasks/activities that changed/shaped your leadership skills.
Demonstrates sound research skills/use of quality academic sources – Your research throughout the portfolio assessment should show good research through citations of quality academic sources. The more quality academic references used, the more you will be demonstrating your developed research skills.
Able to use appropriate grammar and spelling, as well as appropriate academic referencing. Sufficient depth of sources and accuracy in adherence to referencing standards – Spelling and grammar throughout your writing. I have said this MANY times, but spelling should not be an issue with so many tools out there to do a final check on your writing. And Australian English consistently to be used. Make sure your citing style is WSU Harvard Style – This is easy marks if done correctly.
I have already done this :
The task
Create your own original digital image (e.g. photograph- (not one from the internet)) that best captures the act of ‘leading’ or ‘leadership’ from your individual perspective. Upload that image to your blog in vUWS. Tag your individual image with (3) three words that are most emblematic (i.e. serve as a symbol of the concept) of your concept of leadership;
Type an explanation for your choice of image (and 3 tags) in your blog. In your written explanation cross-reference to some relevant literature on leadership (to highlight the links between your lay concepts on leading and theories of leadership);
Articulate this to a seminar group, explaining the reason for your choice. Listen to other’s explanation, noting any significant differences
Have two or three other students (as assigned by the unit coordinatr) comment on your individual blog and you comment on theirs. By responding to their comments in your blog you can further demonstrate your capacity to collaborate with others in developing and re-framing your concepts;
Join this group in week 12 tutorial online. Work collaboratively to create an original group image (with 3 tags) that is representative of the group’s ‘collective’ perception of leadership (in other words, the group constructs a unique ‘depiction’ of leadership, synthesising the views of the group members).
Load the group image (and tags) to your blog. Write your explanation for the group’s choice of image, making any connections you can identify to relevant theory on leadership;
Compare your depiction of leadership (reflected in your own image, tags and written explanation) with the group’s. Highlight the different underpinning theoretical approaches on leadership portrayed;
Outline how you have deepened your understanding and knowledge of leadership through the collaboration (Steps 3-6 above);
Conclude by discussing key aspects of leadership that you would like to strengthen as part of your future personal and professional development;
Progressively complete all the above steps (in writing) in your online blog (Weeks 9-13);
Compile (cut & paste/edit/reference) your final written blog (include images and student comments as an appendix, and scholarly references) into a word document and upload to Turnitin for grading/feedback by the due date. N.B. 1500 words does not include digital images & tags or the comments of the other students which are in the appendix. The reference list is not counted in the word count. -
