Genotoxicology Assignment: Artificial food coloring and Mutation
Your assignment is to write a two-page report (single-spaced, NOT including the list of
references; skip one line between paragraphs) on some aspect of genotoxicology, for which you
    cite at least 10 references obtained from PubMed. It should have a story that needs a theme or a common thread that ties it all together. I have attached a short report on genotoxicology in a specific occupation;
please use it as a guide.
    Written report
The intent of this assignment is threefold:
    (a) to acquaint you with the site, Pub Med, which is an abstract service sponsored by the
    National Library of Medicine;
    (b) to demonstrate the usage of genotoxicity assays to protect us from chemical and physical
agents, in the workplace, in the environment, and in foods, that may adversely affect our
    genes and chromosomes. Some of these assays (e.g., Ames assay; Allium assay;
chromosomal aberrations, mitotic aberrations, aneuploidy, & polyploidy; micronucleus
    assay; sister chromatid exchange; comet assay) were discussed in laboratory or in lecture;
you are not limited to these assays. Cancer risks and reproductive hazards also fall within
the realm of genotoxic risks and are suitable; and
    (c) to show the correct way to cite science research publications. Please follow the format
    in the sample essay.
In your report, if you decide to include other genotoxicity tests, you must – in one or two
sentences – define the purpose of that assay. For example, “cell transformation assay” – this test
evaluates the abilities of chemical or physical agents to change normal, healthy cells into
populations of neoplastic cells. Transformation is usually monitored by the cells changing from
    substratum-dependent growth to anchorage-independent growth.
Enter the PubMed site http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi and search your topic with the focus on hazards to genes or to chromosomes.
NOTE: In-text citations (i.e., citations within the report itsels):
When citing a source within the text –
 If one author, then last name and year
 If two authors, cite both last names
 If more than three authors, cite the last name of the first author followed by et al. [which
means, “and others’] and the year
 When citing the genus and species name of an organism, you need to use italics,
for example, Salmonella typhimurium; terms such as et al., in vivo, in vitro, in utero, and
    in situ also require italics.
    NOTE: Bibliography (References):
When citing scientific journal articles in the bibliography:
 Last name, initials (complete first and middle names are seldom used), year, title of the
article, journal (usually, abbreviated), volume (usually, the issue number is omitted),
and first and last page of the article.
 In science publications, usually all authors are listed; however, in some journals, the
initial three authors are listed followed by “et al.,”. Either format can be used.
    .
    When citing from Internet sources:
Basic format: name of author, year, title of the work, the day that source was retrieved, and web
    address of the source.

  • Title: “Exploring the Role of Microbiota in Human Health: A Comprehensive Literature Review and Future Directions”

Please wrote an abstract for Final Senior Synthesis Paper included in this order. Also compose all components for poster based on Final Senior Synthesis Paper. 1)Your Abstract or Introduction of some kind to present the topic and question addressed by the review
    2) The heart of your literature review — This information will comprise the bulk of your poster. Since this is meant to be, in general, a visual aid for your presentation, this content can take various forms. The poster should tell a cohesive story about your topic at an appropriate level (your audience is your Bio classmates).
    3) At least two Figures, Tables, Images, etc of some type, or two distinct panels of a more complex figure, with approval based on the resources provided on the end of the paper– At least one should be an original figure that you created.  These can be diagrams, graphs, pictures, tables etc. anything that helps you support and clarify the material that you are presenting in your review.  You may include figures, etc that were not part of your written review; content for a poster may be different than what you chose to present in your written review. You should compose an original figure caption for each figure that also includes the citation.
    4) Directions for future research, connections among research findings, contextualization or application of topic, any remaining questions, etc.
    5) A set of “essential” references (your whole list is not necessary, but include figure references and primary informational ones)
Make sure the poster components answers all of these:
    Checklist:
Does it tell a cohesive story? Do all the figures relate to the specific topic & contribute to telling the “story”?
Do you synthesize information? Do you talk about how the figures relate to each other and to the overall topic? Is the take home message clear?
Do you include references? You don’t need to list all your references, just the top 3-4 main references you used.
Did you include original figure captions for the figures that also include citations?
Are the figures large and clear enough that they will be visible to someone standing 2 feet away?
Do you have enough text that someone can get the gist without you there, but not too much that they would need more than a few minutes to read through it? Is it formatted in a way that is readable (eg. bullet points or short paragraphs)?
Is this written at an appropriate level for the target audience? Is it explained well enough that a Bio classmate outside of the specific field understand it (eg. could an MCON major understand a poster about a molecular topic)?
Does your title accurately reflect the focus of your poster?

  • Title: The Impact of Diabetes on Tissues and Organs: A Physiological Perspective

For the report you should include:
The normal physiological function of the tissue/organs addressed in the report.
Background on the disease affecting that organ—how the disease arises and how it affects physiology.
Discuss stages and severity of the disease/condition/syndrome
Discuss if and how this disease affects cell communication (Cell signalling), endocrine physiology/homeostasis, cellular physiology of affected cells, muscle physiology, cardiovascular physiology, renal physiology,
Treatment of the disease based on  physiological processes affected .
you may imbed pictures, graphs, videos links
You should include at least 5 references.  At least two references should be primary source (research articles).  One article should be a recent review article on the disease. Use MLA format for references.
Minimun of 5 pages (not including references, photos, graphs), double spaced

  • Title: Synthesizing Themes in Literature Review: A Foundation for Research in the Field of Education

(it is a literature review assigment) usually has an organizational pattern and combines both summary and synthesis. A summary is a recap of the important information of the source, but a synthesis is a re-organization, or a reshuffling, of that information. It might give a new interpretation of old material or combine new with old interpretations. Or it might trace the intellectual progression of the field, including major debates. And depending on the situation, the literature review may evaluate the sources and advise the reader on the most pertinent or relevant.” (UNC at Chapel Hill Writing Center)
The literature review establishes the major themes within your field that your (hypothetical) research project grows from. Using these resources. The literature review for your research paper takes the individual resources and, through synthesis, identifies for your reader the common themes that can be identified between those resources, allowing your reader to gain an understanding of the foundation from which your research project grows without having to be an expert in the subject themselves.
Construct a 750-1,000 word (3-4 pages properly formatted) literature review using these resources.  You should use a total of at least six scholarly, peer-reviewed resources in your literature review, synthesizing resources based on common themes.
THE ABOVE INFORMATION IS A DESCRIPTION OF THE ASSIGMENT.
PLEASE USE ALL OF THESE RESOURCES THAT I HAVE PROVIDED.
WRITE 3 PAGES WITH 700 TO 1000 WORDS IN APA FORMAT.
WRITE COVER PAGE AND REFERENCE PAGE NOT INCLUDING ON THE NUMBER OF PAGES.

  • “Exploring the Potential of Microbes: The Discovery of a New Antibiotic from Hydra”

Nearly all the antibiotics used to stop bacterial infections are natural compounds that come from microbes themselves. For example, penicillin is derived from a fungus, while vancomycin, the antibiotic used when bacteria are resistant to many other drugs, comes from a bacterium. Furthermore, although many antibiotics are chemically synthesized to resemble natural antibiotics, the “models” for them are natural products of microbes themselves.
As more bacteria become resistant to traditional antibiotics, alternative drugs must be found. Recently, scientists discovered a completely new type of antibiotic that comes from Hydra, pictured above, a small freshwater creature famous for regenerating itself when its tissues are severed. While investigating defensive mechanisms on the skin of hydras in 2008, scientists at the University of Keil in Germany came across a protein that is active against both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Most importantly, it works against some drug-resistant strains of bacteria. They named this protein hydramacin.
    –           Can you imagine why microbes produce chemicals that are inhibitory to other microbes?
    –           What enables a new drug to be effective against bacteria that are able to resist old drugs?
    –           How do you suppose the scientists figured out that the compound in Hydra acts against both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria?
