but is rather closely related to socio-economic inequalities and individual
issues. It is, hence,
essential to address all these issues in advance if the welfare of homeless
persons is to be
enhanced (Sleet & Francescutti, 2021).
Thesis Statement: Homelessness in San Diego is complex and related to various
factors,
such as racism and sexism, mental illnesses, drug and alcohol addiction, and
the role of
technology and social networking sites, which require complex and culturally
appropriate
approaches.
Causes/Risk Factors
Systemic Inequalities
The following are some factors that explain the high homelessness in San Diego.
The
problem of the short supply of affordable housing and the issue of income
disparity are some of
the systematic factors that explain homelessness (Peak et al., 2020). The
absence of affordable
homes continues to result in relapses and the continuation of the homeless
cycle.
Mental Health Disorders
San Diego’s homeless people are also diagnosed with untreated mental health
disorders,
which are crucial in initiating and sustaining homelessness (Liu et al., 2020).
As can be seen,
people who do not receive proper mental health care fail to secure proper
housing.
Substance Abuse
Mental illness and substance abuse become a common reason for homelessness in

Diego. Substance abuse may develop as a reaction to homelessness or after
becoming homeless
(Ohlsen et al., 2024). Housing stability is also a significant challenge when

use since it hinders the achievement of this goal.
Technology and Social Media
Providing connections, technology, and social media can increase the loneliness

disconnection of homeless people in San Diego (Yousefi-Rizi et al., 2021). The
digital divide
exacerbates the already existing situation by cutting off homeless people from

San Diego’s homeless population experiences a higher risk of diseases such as

A, and they are likely to succumb to it since they are unable to afford

Impact on Well-being
Residing in precarious situations close to water sources as a result of urban
homelessness

(Flanigan & Welsh, 2020). Volatility hinders attempts to enhance the
standard of living and
leaves people’s capacity for finding sustainable solutions in shambles.
Solutions/Interventions
Housing and Health Services
San Diego must continue to increase available
supportive housing programs and improve
healthcare accessibility to solve homelessness
(Abdel-Samad et al., 2021). Housing-first
strategies have helped offer stability and facilitate
the recovery process (Yousefi-Rizi et al.,
2021).
Technology Literacy Programs
The introduction of digital literacy programs can
contribute to the enhancement of
homeless people’s quality of life. This is by
increasing their opportunities to use online resources
and services and thus reducing digital inequality and
social exclusion (Sleet & Francescutti,
2021).
Social Workers in Libraries
The placement of social workers in public library
environments presents a chance to refer
homeless people to necessary programs and resources
(Urada et al., 2022). A library is a
sanctuary where people can obtain information and get
help without prejudice and stigma.
Community Building
Community development and peer support interventions
for homeless persons can
increase their personal resources and social inclusion
