  • Title: Exploring Surprising Moments, Authorship, and Tradition in Jazz Music

    Listen to:
    So Wha: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJEzFvXx3Xw
    All Blues: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-488UORrfJ0
    1. Pick 2 surprising moments from the solos in these tracks (provide a timestamp), it could come from what the soloist plays, how the other musicians react, or a combination of these. Describe what’s happening in terms of melody, harmony, rhythm, and/or timbre, as well as the emotional impact, and why the moment surprised you.
    2. With multiple soloists playing improvised music, how do jazz practices complicate notions of singular authorship found in western European culture and the “myth of the genius”? Refer to musical moments in Kind of Blue to support your point.
    3. Is jazz America’s “classical” music? What do you think is meant by that? Is the nature of jazz to be constantly innovating? Or should it be a tradition that is preserved? Do you view European classical music differently in this respect and why?

  • “The Tragic End of Hamlet: A Presentation of Death and Redemption”

In Hamlet, everyone dies. Hamlet accidentally kills Ophelia’s father, Polonius. He then kills Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Ophelia goes insane and commits suicide. Hamlet and Laertes have a sword fight and are wounded with Laertes’s poisoned blade. Gertrude drinks poisoned wine, which Claudius intended for Hamlet. Hamlet stabs Claudius with the poisoned sword and forces him to drink the rest of the poisoned wine. Hamlet and Laertes, each mortally wounded by the poison, exchange forgiveness and die. Can you make it a presentation of the work? Make sure you include a thesis statement, main talking points, and conclusion. Make it 10 slides with pictures, if possible, to support.

  • Title: The Impact of Flashbulb Memories and Inaccurate Memories on Remembering Current Events

One of the most interesting and important types of memory we learned about in chapter 8 is the Flashbulb memory. The example that the authors use is the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade center. Think about a more recent current event like the most recent school shooting that has happened in the USA. Do you remember where you were when you heard about this event? Who were you with and what were you doing? What did you talk about? After jotting down a few notes, contact someone who was with you when you learn about the school shooting and ask them what they remember from that day. Are your memories identical or different? Are the differences important details or not? Write about what you learned about inaccurate and false memories from this experience and the chapter 8 section on Flashbulb memories and Inaccurate and False Memories.

  • The Moral Dilemma of Edward: An Ethical Analysis

The Mid-term essay is a five-paragraph essay written in APA 7 format in about two to three pages, NOT including the title and references pages, at approximately (1000 words) long.
As usual, I’ll evaluate your papers mainly by the following criteria:
an understanding of the assigned material
    originality of your ideas,
    development of thoughts, and
    style of writing.
Edward is taking his daily walk near the train tracks when he notices that the train that is approaching is out of control. Edward sees what has happened: the train driver saw five workmen ahead on the tracks and slammed on the brakes, but the brakes failed, and the driver fainted. The train is now rushing toward the five men; the banks are so steep that they will not be able to get off the track in time. Fortunately, Edward is standing next to a switch, which he can throw, that will turn the train onto a sidetrack. Unfortunately, there is one person standing on the sidetrack with his back turned. Edward can throw the switch, killing the one, or he can refrain from doing this, letting the five die. Remember, Edward did not build the train, nor is he responsible for its current predicament. However, if he pulls the switch, he is both intervening and making a judgment regarding human value. Take this into account when writing your essay.  There is a reason this is considered a “moral dilemma.”
Incorporating what you have learned from ethics, answer the following questions.
    1. “Do you think Edward should throw the switch? Why?”
    2. Would a Utilitarian agree? Why?
    3. Would a Kantian agree? Why?
    4. What do you believe is the best option “What is The Good?” Why?

Effective disease analysis often requires an understanding that goes beyond these systems and their capacity to work together. The impact of patient characteristics, as well as racial and ethnic variables, can also have an important impact.
