Angela, I enjoyed reading your well-written post on nursing theory and its importance in nursing. We appear to share similar views of how nursing theories have impacted the profession over the years. We each described how theories offer a systematic framework for assessing situations and phenomena. We also both pointed to the capacity nursing theories have to empower nurses by strengthening knowledge and building confidence. When nursing theories are utilized to further develop knowledge and curiosity, the nurse is more likely to contribute to the ever-growing knowledge base of nursing research.

When considering what nursing theory most impacts your practice, you chose Watson’s theory of human caring. This is an excellent theoretical model upon which to base nursing practice because it reflects the key trait most often associated with the profession. The theory emphasizes the importance of being authentic, honest, and ethical in patient communications, delivering high-quality treatment through caring behaviors such as active listening, appropriate eye contact, and attending to cultural barriers (Cirakoglu et al., 2024). These are the characteristics instilled in nursing students from the first day of their classes. Watson’s theory is essential to providing empathetic care that addresses patients’ emotional and psychological needs.
