  • Title: Finding Evidence to Support Your Thesis: Week 2

This week you will find the second piece of evidence to support your thesis and write a summary of the information. After reviewing the information below, locate a reliable, scholarly source for your thesis. The source must be no more than 5 years old and must be a news article or journal article. Read the source then compose a 250-word (minimum) summary of the article. Do not quote the article. Paraphrase and summarize the contents in your own words. Finally, include an MLA reference for this source.
Begin this activity by reading Everything’s an Argument, Chapter 20. Be sure to note the difference between synthesizing, paraphrasing, and summarizing. You will use all of these techniques, in addition to quoting, when you write your final paper. However, this week, we will focus on summarizing one source related to your topic or thesis. If you need assistance locating a source, you can review Chapter 18 on Finding Evidence or contact your instructor or librarian for assistance. You want to be sure that the source you select this week is reputable/reliable. If you need assistance, you can review Chapter 19 on Evaluating Sources. However, here are a few tips that will help you select a reliable source.
Relevant: Make sure that the source is actually related to your argument.
Credible: Make sure that the author or publisher is reputable and has experience with the field or topic they are discussing.
Current: Check the date of the publication and make sure that the date is recent. While there are some instances where historical information is appropriate, find a source this week that is NOT more than 5 years old.
Accurate: Check the source’s internal evidence. Make sure the source references or quotes other relevant, credible, and current people and/or sources.
    Formatting Requirements:
You must include your article summary and a Works Cited MLA reference.
Since this is a pre-writing activity, there are no other formatting requirements.

  • Title: The Impact of Emotional Intelligence on College Success

You explored several theories (growth mindset, emotional intelligence, grit, and learned optimism) that will contribute to a successful college experience. The purpose of this assignment is to identify the theory that you think will have the greatest impact on your college experience, explain the theory citing evidence from resources provided in study activities, and then analyze and evaluate its significance to your college experience.
There is no form provided for this assignment. You will need to create a new document on your computer and clearly label your responses as Identify & Explain, Analyze, and Evaluate. You may also choose to address these questions in essay form. The word counts are recommended guides to support the meaningful development of ideas.
    1. Identify and explain the theory that you think will have the greatest impact on your college experience. The response should contain 150-200 words and use explanatory sentences. Explanatory sentences must include specific references from specific study activities. Using the learning activities provides evidence of learning from the experts’ sources.
You may want to answer the following questions in your explanation:
What is the main point of the theory (definition)?
To provide supporting details, you may want to ask: How was the theory developed?
    Who are the leading researchers?
Why was the theory developed, or what is the purpose, impact, or importance of the theory?
    2. Analyze your selected theory by providing ideas and examples to justify this theory as having the greatest impact on your success in college. Here you are answering why you think this theory will be important for college success. Your submission should demonstrate your awareness of the connections between the expert sources and their significance to you. The analysis should focus on why this theory will impact your college success. Your response should be between 150-200 words and use explanatory sentences.
Below are some questions that may help guide your analysis. These questions should help begin and encourage your thinking, but not limit your considerations by only answering these few questions.
What ideas stood out to me? Why? Were they new, or in opposition to existing beliefs?
What are the observations, or past experiences that shape my understanding?
Which aspects of the theory will impact my college success – make connections?
    3. Evaluate the potential impact of this theory on your future college goals. Your evaluation should be your opinion, or judgments of the information previously analyzed and may address how this will be important. Your response should be between 150-200 words and use explanatory sentences.
Below are some questions that may support your evaluation.
What choices have I made in the past that reflect the theory? Which choices have not? What outcomes resulted from those choices?
Which aspects of the theory do I value? What components of the theory have helped me gain insights, and from what evidence?
How might the knowledge of the theory help my personal growth?
What are the possible outcomes and consequences of applying this theory to my future?

  • Final Project Part 1: Case Study Selection and Intervention Choice “Exploring the Efficacy of Child-Centered Play Therapy for Children Affected by Adverse Childhood Experiences: A Review of the Literature”

As you learned in Week 1, for the Final Project, you will research one counseling intervention in relation to an identified mental health issue and apply your findings to a case study. This week, there are a number of decisions for you to make to solidify your project. You will complete Part I of the Final Project.  The first step is to choose the case study that you plan to utilize in your project. You will notice that some case studies include more than one potential client. For example, in the case of Jim, the 14-year-old adolescent, you may opt to focus on the family or the teen. After you identify the case and choose the client, identify one presenting problem or mental health issue for counseling focus.
Now, put your counselor hat on. You have an identified client and a presenting problem. Where do you go from here? As a counselor, you have an ethical responsibility to provide competent practice. There is an expectation that you will utilize interventions that are supported with empirical research.  So, your next step is to identify an intervention that you would like to use with your client.  For your project, you will investigate current counseling research related to the intervention in order to make an informed decision about evidence-based practice. To launch your research, you will formulate a research question to guide your investigation.
    To Prepare
Review the Final Project Worksheet Part 1 media program found in the Learning Resources for this week
Review the Final Project Case Studies found in the Learning Resources for this week and choose one of the four case studies to use for your Final Project. School counselors should choose Case 1 or 2.
Consider the case study and identify your client and the mental health issue you will focus on
Choose one intervention that you would like to further investigate for possible use with the client
