  • Analyzing Vonnegut’s Use of Ethos, Pathos, and Logos in Selected Short Stories Title: Incorporating Evidence to Support Your Thesis

Below are the detailed intructions from my professor please make sure you follow them down to the smallest detail. I’ve also attached a sample essay and the stories that need to be read in order to create the essay
Essay 2: Reasoning in Kurt Vonnegut’s Short Fiction
For your second essay, you’ll perform a rhetorical analysis of one of the ASSIGNED short stories by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.:
    “Harrison Bergeron”
    “Welcome to the Monkey House”
    “The Euphio Question,”
Focus especially on his use of ethos, pathos, and logos to convey his argumentative opinion about a particular subject and explaining how he presents his opinions (and possibly his opposition’s) and why he believes what he does.
TRIGGER WARNING: The short story “Welcome to the Monkey House” contains a scene of sexual assault.  Proceed with caution.  If you are concerned about exposure to such disturbing content, please do NOT read this story.  You can avoid it entirely without any consequence on your essay, discussion post, or quiz grades.
YOUR TASK: You should observe and explain how he uses (and possibly misuses) logical and emotional appeals, as well as his “author persona.”  Then you will judge whether he is successful in his effort, explaining why he was or was not successful.  The point is for you to focus on the author’s use of ethos, pathos, and logos in the novel—no matter how weak or strong— to persuade his readers to believe as he does, judging his effort as a means of understanding what is and what is not quality argumentation.
NOTE:  ALWAYS ASSUME YOUR READER HAS READ THE WORK OR WORKS YOU ARE ANALYZING IN YOUR ESSAY.  NO NEED TO SUMMARIZE THE TEXTS FOR YOUR AUDIENCE.  THEY HAVE READ THEM, BUT THEY NEED YOU TO TEACH THE WORK TO THEM.
    Possible subjects maybe include:
    Vonnegut’s argument against religion
His argument for or against society’s use of technology
His argument for or against personal freedom, etc.
BUT you are welcome to pick another argument to investigate, with instructor approval, as long as you focus on one of the five ASSIGNED short stories.
Your essay should feature the following:
Construct a precise thesis statement that articulates your judgmental response to Vonnegut’s reasoning in the short story. Make strong claims about what you believe to be the purpose and the overall effect(s) of the writer’s use of ethos, pathos, and logos, and then defend your assertions over the course of your essay.  This sentence will be the FIRST sentence of your CONCLUSION paragraph.  Yes, I know that sounds weird, but trust me.
Your essay should feature a clear and consistent focus throughout, with coherent and unified body paragraphs, with three of them likely centered on ethos, pathos, and logos, with other points being covered in additional paragraphs. In other words, every paragraph should be constructed to support your main idea—your thesis—without any dissention among your body paragraphs.  If the paragraph doesn’t support your thesis in some clear way, get rid of it, or modify your thesis accordingly.  You will have at least FIVE body paragraphs, plus an introduction and conclusion.
Organize/sequence your paragraphs in a deliberate and effective method that best leads your readers through your argument/analysis. When one is writing about a single narrative text, this organization pattern is usually emphatic/progressive or chronological/sequential.  For this essays, progressive (your paragraphs getting stronger as we go through the essay) would be best.
Provide specific and relevant textual evidence in support of each of your topic sentence assertions in every paragraph. Keep in mind that every body paragraph must feature some evidence from the text.  Approximately 10-15% of your essay should be “direct quotations,” with the rest of your supporting evidence being a combination of paraphrase and summary.
Don’t assume your readers will interpret your evidence/support how you want them to, so add the appropriate level of contextual explanation in your quotation and paraphrase lead-ins and analytical commentary afterwards that clearly connects any provided evidence to your topic sentences and thus to your thesis statement. In other words, don’t just throw in a quotation and think that’s enough.  Instead, blend your quotations into your essay by providing a lead-in that connects your quote to the ideas you’ve been discussing in the paragraph.  And the after the quote, explain WHY/HOW the quotation proves your point to be valid.
Use the MLA Format for all textual citations, including any and all paraphrase, summary, and direct quotations. In addition, you will provide a complete and accurate Works Cited page for this essay, which does not count towards the minimum page requirement.
Page Length: 4 full pages minimum and 6 pages maximum, plus a Works Cited page
    Word Count: 1,300 words, minimum

  • Developing Legal Reforms for Macro-Level Inequality 1. Article title: “Racial Inequality and the Criminal Justice System: A Call for Reform” 2. a) In-Text Citation: (Smith, 2019, p. Citation Styles and Formats for Journal Articles and Book Chapters

Inequality Paper Step 3: Develop Your Legal Reform!
For Inequality Paper Step 3, you will find 1 (one) Law Review Article (you will follow the instructions on the Find Law Reviews link to summarize, analyze and cite them.)  (Graduate Students should find at least 2 Law Review Articles.)  Law Reviews (or Law Journals) are journals where law scholars write their analyses of the law and arguments for how to change the law.  Law Review Articles often are called normative articles because they argue how the law should change or how the law ought to be.  For instance, a Law Review Article might explain the current state of campaign finance law and then make suggestions for how to reform that area of law.  (In contrast, scientific articles like sociology articles are called empirical articles because they argue about how the world is or what processes are true in the world.  For example, an empirical article asks what the causes and effects of various phenomena in the world are, like the causes and effects of inequality.)
You will use your chosen Law Review Article to build your reform argument in your Inequality Paper.  Follow the instructions for using the Nexis Uni database on the Find Law Reviews page to find your Law Review Article.  (NOTE: Keep in mind, scholarly law books also are acceptable sources, and those books sometimes will appear in your searches when you search for Law Review Articles.  Academic scholarly law books typically are published at University book presses such as Oxford University Press, University of California Press, etc.  NOTE: A scholarly law book is not just a book that gives you the laws like a statute book; instead, a scholarly law book explains the current state of the law and gives suggested reforms; it is like a Law Review Article, but longer).
Law Review Article Selection and Citation
Find the following information about your Law Review Article:
    a) Article title: What is the title and subtitle of your Law Review Article?
    b) Author(s): What are the full names of the article’s authors? Include author affiliations and credentials. Note: author affiliations are frequently listed with the authors’ names, however, sometimes you need to look in a footnote on the title page or elsewhere in the document. In rare occasions, author affiliations are not listed.
    c) Journal Name: What is the name of the Law Review in which the source was published?
Create an In-text citation and a References list citation for your Law Review Article:
2 .a) In-Text Citation: Write an in-text citation for your Law Review Article. Use the in-text citation template on the Cite Your Sources page to put together your citation.
    2. b) Reference List Citation: Write a Reference list citation for your Law Review Article. Use the journal article template on the Cite Your Sources page to put together your citation.
    3.  Summarize your article (minimum 250 words, maximum 500 words). Include in your summary the Article’s main point, the topics covered, and the main arguments of the author(s). Use the information under Analyze Legal Articles to help you analyze and find key information in your articles for your summary.
    4.  Reflection: How can you use the article’s arguments and reasoning to help build your own arguments for a legal reform that will fix your macro-level inequality?
Citations provide the information necessary for readers to identify and retrieve each source you use. When you use someone else’s words or ideas in your papers, you should create In-text citations (within the paper) and References list citations (at the end of the paper). Each In-text citation should lead to a References list citation, and each References list citation should come from an In-text citation.
Follow Dr. Patel’s citation templates when you’re putting together your citations:
Journal Article In-Text Citation (One Author): (Author last name, Year, Page numbers)
Journal Article In-Text Citation (Up to Three Authors): (Author last name, Author last name, &  Author last name, Year, Page  numbers)
Journal Article In-Text Citation (More Than Three Authors):(Author last name, Author last name, Author last name, et al., Year, Page  numbers)
    Journal Article Bibliography Citation:

  • Title: “Moving Towards the Future: Implementing an ERP System for Phoenix Fine Electronics”

Phoenix Fine Electronics (PFE) is a medium or mid-sized company, which is growing rapidly each year selling technology products to retail consumers. The company has an annual revenue of $15 million in sales. PFE started with one store, but has grown to 25 stores and has expanded into a second state.
PFE has one store in a town with a population of 100,000 and three stores in towns with populations exceeding 200,000. The goal of the company is to continue expansion into an additional 3 neighboring states within the next 5 years. PFE wants to utilize the same population numbers to determine the number of stores it should open. It would also like a marketing firm to do an analysis of each town that meets the population criteria in order to determine the best cities in which to open new stores.
Each store employs a store manager and an IT manager, who both directly report to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
The current IT plan for each store is to utilize technology to support the store; increase sales; track inventory; secure store customer data; perform payroll; and report all sales, inventory, and payroll data to the main office. The IT manager is responsible for managing the IT systems, making decisions on what technology and software are needed, and implementing the systems while ensuring accurate reporting to the main office. The store manager is responsible for all staffing, inventory, and sales functions within the store.
With the expansion and acquisition of smaller independent stores, the CEO is worried about how department and customer data can be aggregated to allow the company to make better, timely business decisions. Even with such a wide footprint, the company must ensure unique, outstanding customer service and provide value to the consumer base. The CEO lacks IT experience and has been hesitant to adopt the suggestions of the store and IT managers, which is to give the company an online presence and advance it into national competition with other consumer electronics stores.
The CEO hired a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Chief Information Officer/Chief Technology Officer (CIO/CTO). The CFO will oversee the company finances for the expansion. The CIO/CTO will oversee the consolidation of the disparate systems and technologies that exist between the stores, streamline the information gathering and reporting to the main office, and develop an online presence that will catapult the company into a competitive position on a national level.
Your job is to help the new CIO/CTO move PFE toward the future.
    Part 1
Using the numbers in Course Scenario: Phoenix Fine Electronics, perform the following tasks:
