  • Title: Developing a Strong Thesis Statement for an Argumentative Essay

This week you will select a potential research topic and submit a thesis statement for instructor approval. Please note that this activity is graded pass/fail and your instructor may ask you to revise and re-submit your thesis after providing feedback until you have passed the assignment.
Not all essays will require an explicitly stated thesis, but most argumentative essays will. Instead of implying your thesis or main idea, in an argumentative essay, you’ll be required to write out your thesis statement for your audience. A thesis statement is a one (sometimes two) sentence statement that presents the main idea and makes an assertion about your issue. Remember, in an argumentative essay, the assertion you present in your thesis is going to be particularly important.
When you make your assertion in your thesis, it should be clear and direct. You want your audience to have no doubt about your point. Of course, how assertive you are in your thesis and the content you choose to include depends upon the type of argumentative essay you are writing. Your thesis should not make an “announcement” about what your essay will cover. Instead, it should present your assertion.
A thesis like this makes an announcement and would be incorrect:
In this paper, I will persuade you to vote for candidates who support education reform.
A thesis like this makes an assertion and would be correct:
Because our education system is in need of reform, we should vote for candidates who are willing to make the necessary changes.
Your thesis statement is the most important sentence in your essay. It’s your chance to make sure your audience really understands your point. Be sure your assertion and your writing style are clear. While there is no such thing as a “required” place for your thesis statement, most academic essays will present the thesis statement early on, usually at the end of the introduction. There is a reason for this. Audience members are more likely to understand and absorb each point as readers if you have told them, in advance, what they should be getting out of your essay. So, please include the thesis at the end of your introductory paragraph in this course.
Last week you spent some time brainstorming potential arguments. This week, select an argument that you may want to address in your final research paper and develop a good thesis. You can find a list of suggested topics below. However, you can select another topic. Keep in mind the elements of a good argument and thesis statement from the instructional material and contact your instructor if you’d like to get feedback on your selection.
    Resources:
    Potential Research Topics
You are not limited to these ideas. However, if you are unsure if your assertion will make a good argument, contact your instructor for feedback.
    Formatting Requirements:
Include just your thesis statement in the text entry box.
Since this is a pre-writing activity, there are no other formatting requirements.

  • Title: Investigating the Relationship between Home Math Environments and Children’s Numerical Thinking Development

In this course project, you will propose an empirical research plan to investigate a research question regarding children’s numerical or mathematical thinking development. (Yes, I’d rather you pose just ONE research question and have it adequately addressed within the space of this project. If you propose a whole series, you must have each one of them adequately addressed or points will be deducted. So don’t make it hard for yourself.) The proposal should be written in APA style (and essay style, not bullet-point style, paragraphs with grammatically complete sentences). It should include the required sections and components specified as below. As to the length, it varies by the topic you choose and the key is whether you have addressed your posed RQ adequately and appropriately. But an estimate would be about 6-8 pages, double spaced.
    I. Introduction
There are three sections you must include and adequately address in Introduction.
    1. The Problem & Its Importance
    2. Review of the Relevant Literature by clearly pointing out (a) the knowns (i.e., the current state of knowledge related to your research goal), and (b) the unknowns that your paper identifies and aims to address.
    3. The Present Study with (a) the specific research question; and (b) the hypothesis/prediction.
    II. Method
Please include and adequately address the following in Method.
    1. Participants: (a) sample size; (b) basic demographics and also any additional demographical information that would matter to the question you investigate (e.g., if you investigate CP-knowledge development, children’s age must be specified in not just years, but months; if you investigate home math environments, household SES and parental educational levels should be provided); (c) sampling and recruitment procedures; (d) where to run the study with participants (e.g., online via zoom videos, at public spaces in museums, parks, in a quiet private lab room, etc.)
    2. Design: (a) the design method (e.g., survey, online experiment, home observation session, etc.); (b) variables & measurements: name the variables involved in the RQ and their operational definition where needed; (c) tasks or measures; and (d) measurement plans (e.g., if continuous, time length measured by “in minutes,” accuracy by “percent absolute error,” correct rate by “number of correct trials;” if discrete, how many levels, and what they are, e.g., 2 levels as “yes or no”; 4 categories as “1-, 2-, 3-, and CP-knowers”).
    3. Procedure: step-by-step, how will the study be administered to the participants from the start till to end.
    III. Analysis Plan
This is a proposal, so you won’t have the Results section, but will end here with a proposed analysis plan. Please address the following adequately.
    1. The statistical method (hypothesis test) you will use to test the given RQ and why (e.g., I will use an independent-samples t test, because the IV is discrete with two conditions administered to two independent sample groups and the DV is continuous).
    References
You must appropriately cite any original works used in the body of the writing by following APA style for in-text citations AND include all the reference entries in the References section formatted in APA style.
