The topic I chose is number 2 found in the “Final Paper Guidelines” pdf which is racial
hierarchy: Sociologists have attempted to map the racial terrain of the US using hierarchical models. What do these models do well? What do they miss? Should we continue to use them? If yes, why? If not, what alternatives can we use to understand race and ethnic relations?
I have no preference of how you choose to approach this paper, just nothing controversial
and make it acceptable for the class. I attached all of the class readings so please choose
10 to use in the paper to fulfill the requirement of sources from the course readings as asked for in the guideline I attached. The other remaining 10 sources should come from peer reviewed sources. Find any that are appropriate for the paper. Please do not count the title and
reference page towards because the minimum for the essay is 8 pages not including those.

Planning Writing Lessons Title: Crafting Narrative Writing: A Series of Mini-Lessons to Guide Students through the Writing Process Lesson 1: Generating Ideas for a Narrative Piece Objective: Students will be able to generate ideas for a narrative writing piece
Planning Writing Lessons
Select one of the three primary genres in the NC ELA SCOS for writing (narrative, informative, opinion). You will write three connected mini-lesson plans for subsequent lessons focused on that genre. Your lessons may focus on one writing trait/craft element, or a series of three different traits/craft elements. Your mini-lessons should support students to work through parts of the writing process on a single piece of work in your chosen genre.
Use the “Writing Mini-lesson Template” to design each of your mini-lessons. You should complete all sections in this template.
Your lessons should clearly build upon each other as they guide students through subsequent steps of the writing process on their genre piece (e.g. drafting, editing, and revising an opinion piece), and/or go deeply on writing traits within that genre piece (e.g. teaching three strategies for creating vivid, varied sentences in an informative piece). You must include any necessary resources (using APA formatting) or teaching materials noted in your lesson, such as titles and authors of mentor texts you will incorporate into your lessons, examples of graphic organizers you will introduce to students for planning their writing, or samples of your own writing you will use to model editing.

Title: Navigating Foreign Cultures: Lessons from The Alchemist
Read the book: The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
One major point of the novella is Santiago’s navigation of a foreign culture. Initially, his naiveté hinders his ability succeed, and it costs him dearly in the purse. However, he perseveres by learning about the culture he is navigating, and his hard work pays off as he continues to follow his personal legend. What does the text say about learning about foreign cultures? Does the text encourage cultural travelers to assimilate to the culture they live in, encourage them to only navigate the foreign culture for survival, or does the text suggest a hybrid of these approaches? Be sure to use evidence from both the text and your own navigation within cultures; remember that the U.S. is a country built on the inclusion of diverse cultures, and we can see that in the Chicago/Downstate divide, city/country, farmer/factory worker.

Title: The Misuse of Correlation Analysis in Establishing Causal Relationships: A Critical Examination of Two Scholarly Articles Article 1: “The Relationship between Social Media Usage and Self-Esteem among Adolescents: A Correlational
Correlation is the process of establishing a relationship between two or more factors. Correlation is an important concept that can be misused. One misuse is saying that factor A is caused by factor B just because correlation is found. Cause cannot be implied simply from correlation. Find two examples in scholarly articles within the last 10 years that use correlation analysis. One of the articles must use correlation to imply causation correctly and one article should not have justification to imply cause.
Summarize both articles in at least 500 words.
Explain why cause was appropriate in one article and not in the other.
What would be needed for the second article to justify a statement of cause?
While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, -
