  • Title: Annotated Bibliography for Research Project

The reason the annotated bibliography is included as part of the research project is that writing an annotated bibliography is important in that it provides excellent preparation for the final presentation. One of the issues regarding any type of research is the credibility of the sources used, particularly those obtained from various websites. By forcing you to evaluate each of your potential sources carefully, the annotated bibliography helps you determine if in fact the source you chose is credible and helps you determine how relevant it is to your topic and understand the topic better which will help you develop your presentation.
For this project, you will assess three sources to include:
    1) a complete citation for each source,
    2) a summary of each source, and
    3) an evaluation of each source.
Three sources are required for this assignment (i.e., you are to write an annotation for each source).
    Citation:
Written in APA reference list format. For more help with formatting, see APA handout.
    Summary
What is the purpose of the source, review article, original research? What topics are covered? This section is generally 4-6 sentences that summarize the author’s main point. For more help, see this link on paraphrasing sources.
    Evaluation
After summarizing the article (or research paper or book), it is necessary to evaluate it and state where you found it – its source (e.g., journal, website, etc.).  Briefly answer the following questions in 4-6 sentences:
What is the format or type of source (e.g., peer-reviewed journal paper, website, book)? How reliable is the information in the article, and how credible is the source (e.g., website’s sponsoring organization, journal or book publisher) and the author(s)?

  • “Solving the Problem of Debt: A Proposal for Managing and Eliminating Financial Burdens” “Addressing the Cost of Living Crisis: A Proposal for Financial Stability”

In order to convince the audience that there is a problem that needs to be solved we must find the argument. In order to provide the audience with a solution to the problem we must find the appropriate kairos and be able to persuade the audience.  Keeping in mind what type of audience may be who we are addressing. The writer may take into consideration the particular, universal, self part of the audience.  Where particular is who specifically may be reading the paper, the universal can be who the reader believes may be a part of the audience but may not always be so, and self as the writer needs to be able to view his perspective from his own point of view. Persuasion is the path that the writer will take to walk the audience through to convince them of the point of view or stance the writer is taking. This will make the paper effective in being able to view the stand point of the stance of the essay.
Hello Class, For the first step of convincing the audience that there is a problem, using statistics, anecdotes, or real-life examples can be effective in showing the seriousness of the issue. In the second step of explaining what you want the audience to do, providing clear, actionable solutions and outlining the expected outcomes can help in engaging the audience. Acknowledging opposing viewpoints or steps to solving the problem shows a balanced perspective and your credibility. Justifying the action by providing evidence, research, or expert opinions can make the proposal more persuasive. Using a combination of logic, emotion, and credibility will make the content for each step effective (Lauer & Asher, 2007).      Reference Lauer, J., & Asher, S. (2007). Composition research: Empirical designs. Oxford University Press.
Hello Professor Kenny and classmates,Utilizing the feedback from my peers on my first draft. I plan to utilize the four steps to revise my paper into my final draft. The first step, is helping the audience understand the problem of food insecurity and rising grocery cost. To implement the second step, I wanted to the audience to see the benefits of freezing certain food prices that are needed apart of a healthy diet. In recognizing the opposing viewpoints such as freezing prices would be too much government overreach. I would justify the action of freezing prices to explain how lower grocery costs would allow every citizen to combat food insecurity.
Hello Professor Kenny and classmates, When composing a proposal, the four steps can be essential when writing your essay. First to convince the audience I will start by letting the audience know what the problem is. I can do this by giving a strong introduction with good backup resources used from the GCU library The second step is explaining to the audience what you want done about the problem or issue. I can do this by writing three strong body paragraphs with three different ways to fix this problem. The third step is acknowledging opposing viewpoints or steps to solving the problem. I can do this by conducting research on the opposing view and giving good backup evidence to support my viewpoint and show the audience my view is better. The fourth step is justifying the action you are asking your audience to take. I can do this by using strong evidence throughout my whole essay.
For my proposal essay, I chose to discuss how to get out of debt. In step one, I would convince the audience that debt should be manageable for a person’s life. This covers the issue that needs to be solved. I personally do not think that would take much convincing, but I will back it up with statistics on debt in my area. In step two, I would lay out the various ways to get out of debt, as there is no one correct way to do so. I will acknowledge that while debt can have pros, it should not be so much that a person has no hope. I know that people with little credit, a fancy way of saying reported debt, have a more challenging time getting lenders to work with them, especially if they have little to no savings. I also know that a person should not rely on credit to make it month to month. They should look seriously at spending versus income if this is the case. I know this is a gray area as we are in a literal cost of living crisis in the United States and sometimes there is no other way to make ends meet. I know I went on rambling. I hope that my steps and, ultimately, my proposal essay is sound.
Hello professor and classmates! The four steps that make up a proposal are extremely important to get the right point across to all readers . The first strategy I will use for convincing the reader of the problem, is getting a hook. If I am bale to get somebody interested on the problem by hooking them to the concept, it will ultimately be more convincing than any problem will. For the second part of any proposal, the strategy I will use actions that are easy, but effective for people to put in place. Next, I will bring up opposing viewpoints to the issue, and explain why the viewpoints disagree. I will then use a strategy to not only point out why they have opposing points, but how they are also similar. I will then use the strategy of cause and effect to show that when we can take certain actions, they have effects and those effects will help the problem addressed. Hope everyone has a great week! • “Exploring the Benefits of Bilingual Education: A Researched Argument” “The Benefits of a Plant-Based Diet: Insights from Outside Sources”

This assignment will require you to write your own argument on the subject of your choice. Please note that you will not be allowed to discuss the same topic you discussed in the Argument Essay. You must select another topic!
After you’ve decided on a subject, make sure you know exactly what side you’d like to take. (Are you for or against this thing? If you’re arguing that something is better than something else, why is that so? If you’re arguing that something should be different, how so? Etc.)
This time, incorporating outside research and properly crediting sources (both within the essay itself and on a Works Cited page) is going to be of paramount importance. You will be required to incorporate at least 5 outside sources. What types of sources these are (books, articles, etc.) is up to you, but at least 3 of your sources must be found through the Library Website! The other 2 may be found elsewhere, but they should still be credible sources of information. (To get an idea of what’s credible and what’s not, check out the PDF, “How Do I Know if a Source is Credible?”
My grading of your argument itself will be very much like it was with the Argument Essay. The major difference will be that this time, I will also be closely examining your use of MLA in-text citations, as well as your Works Cited page.
Your Researched Argument Essay will be graded according to the following criteria:
    Format:
Your paper should use MLA style. If you don’t know what that is, you can do a quick Google search.
5 outside sources, at least 3 of which are from the Library website
4-5 full pages in length (4 full pages minimum!)
Times New Roman font, 12 point
    Numbered pages
Double-spaced throughout. (Please DO NOT include extra spacing between your title and introduction, between paragraphs, etc.)
First line of each paragraph should be indented 1 tab space
1″ margins (please don’t mess with the margins to make your essay appear longer… I wasn’t born yesterday!)
Include an original title (not just “Researched Argument Essay.”)
Front page (only!) should have a full header, either at the top left or top right (doesn’t matter.)
Your outside sources should be properly cited within the essay and referenced on a Works Cited page. If you include sources but don’t cite them, you’re accidentally plagiarizing!
Your in-text citations should be correctly incorporated (appearing at the end of the sentence, punctuated with a period after the closing parenthesis, etc.)
Your Works Cited page should be properly formatted (alphabetized, correct indentations, etc.)
    Essay Structure:
An introduction (1 paragraph in length) that gives some context for your issue and includes your thesis statement. (Thesis should be the last sentence of the introduction.)
Body paragraphs that deal (one at a time!) with your main points. Ideally, your body paragraphs will address your main points in the same order in which your thesis statement lists these main points.
Make sure that your body paragraphs are clear and easy to follow. That means you need topic sentences, supporting sentences, and concluding/transitioning sentences. (If you’ve forgotten what these things mean, refer to the “Parts of an Essay” video lecture.)
You should also include a conclusion, where you summarize your main points and state the significance of the issue. (Why should we care?)
What else will I be looking for?
In addition to stating your own points, be sure to also refute opposing viewpoints! You can do this either within your body paragraphs (perhaps before or after stating your own points), or you can do this all at once, perhaps in your very last body paragraph (before your conclusion.) However you choose to do it, it is vital that I see you acknowledging and addressing the fact that there are opposing views out there!
As with your Argument Essay, you should do your best to argue your points as clearly and concisely as possible.
Stay in the formal third person perspective as much as possible!
When you’re referring to what outside sources say, use the present tense. So, not “Smith argued…”, but “Smith argues.”
When you use outside sources (which you must do for this essay), you should be sure to properly introduce the sources (For example: “One study on the effects of vegetarianism found that …”) before quoting or paraphrasing from them. Also, after you reference outside material, you should comment on the significance of that information. (For example: “Therefore, it can be concluded that a vegan diet contributes to better overall health.”)
Before submitting this essay, please carefully revise it for spelling errors, grammar errors, punctuation errors, typos, formatting issues, etc. I’ve been pretty lenient in this regard in the past, but I’m expecting you to present your best work this time!
If you’re having trouble editing your own work (maybe you don’t know exactly what you’re doing wrong), please take the time to visit one of LSC’s writing centers! The writing tutors are very helpful, and tutoring services are free with your tuition.

    Abstract
In this thesis research paper, I endeavor to hone in on the convergence of our gender binary and African American Cis-Womanhood. By using a combination of foundational and contemporary academic papers, I aim to shed light on how the binary under which the United States and the world currently live serves to hinder and dehumanize black cis-gendered women, impeding them from fully exercising their rights, protections, and social standing, which are given to non-black and white cisgender women. This study is guided by an intersectional theoretical framework in aim of a conceptual analysis on how historical constructions of African American femininity interact with the many layers of intersecting identity markers to contribute to the experience and manifestation of discrimination today for the African American cis woman. The present work locates the dynamics at the center of interest to provide insight into the complex ways by which the gender binary shapes and reconfigures experience for African American cis women in society.
    Descriiption of the topic
The research aims to demonstrate that American cis black women of all stripes, are (1. Disproportionately discriminated against by society in line with the definition of gender, (2. That this phenomenon is inherently an intended consequence of the formation of the modern day gender binary. This creates a clear path for black women who are perceived as out of the gender binary by definition. The geographic focus for this study is the United States, covering mostly the African-American communities where discrimination based on race intersects with gender, unjustly becoming a contributor towards compound inequality.
The paper aims to present theoretical frameworks to the history that revolves around the gender binary impact on cis African American womanhood in the US. Prompted by contemporary events; In this case, the #SayHerName campaign, which was asub movement of BLM which highlighted the compound victimisation of black womanhood. The paper gestures to a societal cue to make African American cisgender women a subject of more acedemic focus. Exploring and potentially expanding the intersectionality of race, gender, and social identity, historically it seeks to make sense of the complexities and complications to be found between the oppressions of racism and sexism through conceptual and intersectional means. In these regards, the research of societal standards or expectations on what notions of femininity meant in African American Cultural History does much to continue a pressing concern for many: the perpetual erasures and struggles faced by black women.
Keywords: African American women, cisgender women’s, binary system, black women
    Relation with Previous Courses
The gender binary has its philosophical and foundational basis in the Eurocentric worldview, which historically has treated the rigid system of norms dictating appropriate behavior and roles in society according to perceived biological sex. The community of African Americans themselves has subjected black femininity to its ways of devaluation and dismissal, given the stereotyping of African American women as hypersexual, aggressive, and deviant by nature. My research paper is closely tied to courses I have attended during my undergraduate studies. Specifically, The Making of Crucial Differences in the 21st Century which proffered a foundation grounded in intersectionality theory, which is a multidisciplinary one that gives the complexity of race, gender, and social identity. Moreover, courses that engaged in social perceptions and the subsequent manifest outcomes, specifically Policy and Politics, gave me the right analysis of the perception of the system of oppression and tackling issues with marginalized communities. These courses thus paved the way for the research, whose ultimate goal is to combine the collected knowledge and analytical ability in a rigorous investigation of one of the subcategories of the systemic discrimination system – an aspect of African American feminism.
    Research Question and Sub-Questions
The primary research question that propels this study is: how historical constructions of African American femininity interact with the many layers of intersecting identity markers to contribute to the experience and manifestation of discrimination today for the African American cis woman. To address this question in replete fashion, several sub-questions will be explored: What are the hegemonic historical constructions of femininity?
How do historical constructions of African American femininity contribute to the perpetuation of discrimination in modern society how do intersecting identity markers such as race, gender, class, sexuality, and ability influence the construction of African American femininity?
What roles did stereotypes, media representations, and cultural narratives play in shaping these constructions?
What are the contemporary manifestations of discrimination faced by African American cis women?
How have societal perceptions of African American femininity evolved over time, particularly in the context of slavery, segregation, the Civil Rights, and SayHerName?
What are the limitations of single-axis analyses in addressing the experiences of African American cis women, and how can intersectionality help to deepen our understanding?
    Literature Review
The gender binary is a concept that bifurcates the people into two sexes: male and female, based upon observable characteristics of sex (Beauvoir, 1949, p. 25). Historically constructed, It dates from ancient civilization where division in terms of gender existed. Socially, rigid gender roles are long standing and enacted based on apparent physical differences in regards. Legal systems, religious teachings, and cultural traditions institutionalized and further legitimated traditional gender relations (Crenshaw, 1991, p. 37). For example, during the industrial revolution, the expectations of society to remain constant in gender role, as reinforced through mass media, education systems, and workplace dynamics (Laqueur, p. 78). These continuous aspects of gender aimed at continuing the existing power relations and the perpetuation of the inequalities from gender (Brah & Phoenix, 2004, p. 82).
The roots of binary gender ideology allow us analyze the way in which constructs of binary gender systems interact with race, class, and other social identities to make experiences of discrimination and marginalization (Thomas 2020, p. 55). My research examines African American femininity, the cultural heritage of the Black woman and the resilience needed in completing the Black female experiences associated with race and gender within the complex of social identity (Scott, 1986, p. 106). An interdisciplinary study of sociology, gender studies, and African American studies/hisory to incorporates those at the margins is the purpose of intersectionality in order to dismantle structural barriers and promote pursuits of social justice, understanding, and equity (Crenshaw, 1991, p. 127).
These papers hone in on how, throughout time, racism and sexism based on gender have manifested through the stereotypes of the masculinized “strong black woman” and the “Jezebel” at present, targeting their impact on the general views, portrayal, and treatment of black women in US society. Moreover, the authors hilight the fact that the Black population is diverse in experiences and identities, which provides room for race to intersect with gender, class, and sexuality (Hoskin, 2020, p. 232). Scholars who engage in the study of African American femininity understand that such work “allows room for the complexities of issues of identity, resistance, and empowerment, which are perennially part of the knowledge of relatively ‘marginal’ populations” (Moreira, 2020, p. 163). This literature brings to the fore the need to defy monolithic narratives and lift up voices of Black cisgender women in the project of creating a new society (Coleman, 2023, p. 75).
    Theoretical Framework
Kimberlé Crenshaw explains how individuals do not experience oppression and privilege in isolation but rather through the overlapping and intersecting systems of power and discrimination; Further, that ifferent social categories work together with regard to individual experiences and identities, such as race, gender, class, and sexuality, and the obscales and oppurtunity that arise in regard to your standing in a theory coined, Intersectionality (Crenshaw, 1991, p. 87). Specifically, I plan to hone in on (1. how historical power dynamics within society and the African American community have shaped constructions of femininity and contributed to discrimination & (2. how social locations (a term for economic background, skin tone, geographic location), intersect with gender to shape black female experiences.
Advantages of this approach are that it’s comprehensive and properly inclusive of the groups to whom we refer while offering a more nuanced perspective on power, history, and our society at large than outlooks crafted from the hegemonic perspective. However, there are also limitations here as far as the added layer of complexity and the dearth of of data that comes from the lack of representation of this group is the literature. In this respect, intersectionality also sheds light on the multiplicity of experiences in choosing, organizing, and analyzing sources. Methods
Conceptual analysis is the method used to delve deeper into the nature of theoretical concepts and ideas derived from literature, aimed at affording guidance in gaining insights about the phenomenon under investigation (Braun & Clarke, 2006, p, 44). The advantages of using conceptual is that it helps in getting insights into theoretical concepts and language constructs that would be useful for comprehensiveness. It also guides one in complex frameworks and allows an inclusive analysis within the intersectionality. However, the associated high subjectivity to interpretation and being a very timeconsuming process, this may limit generalizability and tend to oversimplify even the most complex phenomena.
    Sources:
Intersectionality helps to identify pertinent materials, to organize with intersecting identities, and enable conducting a critical analysis of the power structures and social norms that impact African American cis women. My secondary sources consist of periodicals, academic books, and studies that deal with racial and gender-based discrimination and transphobia respectively. Significant readings like Laqueur’s (1997) investigation on the history of political reproductive biology, Scott’s (1986) investigation of gender as a way to outline history, and Eriksson’s (1998) examination of the one-sex model will supply the theorical framework and the historical context. In this regard, Seidman’s (2003) analysis of the social construction of sexuality and Crenshaw’s (1991) discussion of intersectionality can be used to understand how discrimination spurs up the broader perspective of the system of power and oppression. In my research, I’ll employ a thematic approach by identifying key patterns across the literature. Thesis Outline:
