  • “The Dangerous Pursuit of Balance: The European Alliance System and the Outbreak of World War I”

Historical Background: In the late 19th century, European leaders believed that by creating a balance of power they could prevent a large-scale war from happening. The idea was that if the major powers of Europe – countries like England, France, Russia, and Germany – were balanced in strength, no one country could dominate the rest. War could be avoided. Countries began to ally themselves with each other, which would eventually spell disaster as Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by Serbian nationalists, which sparked a war between Russia and Germany.

Shannon and Ashley are Associate in Arts in Human Services interns in their third quarter at a local community college. Your immediate supervisor at Helping Communities Grow, LLC has been their Field Instructor for their internship experience for three weeks now. The interns come in from 9:00 am until 11:30 am on Thursdays. On one Thursday, you were asked by your supervisor to be the point-of-contact for both interns while she attended an all-day conference. Ashley scheduled to shadow your co-worker, Clifford, and Shannon came into your office and asked if she could practice doing intake with a client waiting in the waiting area. Pleased with Shannon’s initiative, you state, “Sure, I will coach you through the intake interview. Ask the client to come into my office, please.”. The client comes in and Shannon is doing a great job asking the questions on the form. Eight minutes into the interview you notice Shannon’s non-verbal cues and that she is struggling with asking questions relative to the client’s sexuality and sexual history. After the intake interview, Shannon acknowledges her discomfort in inquiring about topics of sexuality when processing with you her thoughts and feelings. Shannon opens her notebook and respectfully asks you the following three questions:
What is the Human Services Professional’s role in understanding sexuality with clients from all types of backgrounds?
What are the common themes in human sexuality that Human Services Professionals face when working with diverse clients?
What specific professional behaviors must be shown to exhibit respect with clients—even when the Human Services Professional may be uncomfortable with sexual conversations or topics related to sexuality with all types of clients?
Initial Posting: Please post your response to the three questions being asked by Shannon with a detailed initial posting. Illustrate your summation with a post that provides comprehensive feedback so that she has a firm understanding.
