  • Title: Exploring the Use of Qualitative Research Design to Investigate the Effectiveness of Surgical Smoke Evacuators in Reducing Exposure to Carcinogenic Compounds and Toxic Substances in the Operating Room

For your research or EBP project, discuss the following (restate your topic):
What qualitative research design could be used to investigate this problem.
What would be the research question?
Why did you select this type of study design?
PICO Question: What can be answered, then, in the operation setting, is “Does the use of a specific type of surgical smoke evacuator (for example, with ultrafiltration technology) significantly cut the exposure of the surgical team to carcinogenic compounds and certain toxic substances in comparison with the traditional evacuators under the membrane of electrocautery operation?”

  • “Analyzing the Cost of Operating a Cruise Ship: A Case Study of Holiday Cruise Lines’ Caribbean Summer”

    CASE SCENARIO: HOLIDAY CRUISE LINES
Holiday Cruise Lines is evaluating the cost of operating its newest ship, the Caribbean Summer. In its first year of operation, the Caribbean Summer completed 25 short cruises along the same route, but with varying numbers of passengers on board. The chief operating officer of Holiday Cruise Lines collected the total cost of operating each short cruise, as well as the number of passengers on board, and summarized the data:
ssume that Y in this information is the total cost of operating the ship on a short cruise, in millions of US dollars, while X is the number of passengers on that cruise stated in thousands.
    Questions
    1. According to the information, what was the average total cost of operating the Caribbean Summer on one of its 25 short cruises?
    2. Use this information to find the linear regression equation that best explains the relationship of the total cost of a short cruise to the number of passengers on that cruise. What is that equation? Using that equation, what total cost would you predict for a Caribbean Summer short cruise carrying 2,500 passengers?
    3. What percent of the variation in the total cost of operating the ship on these 25 short cruises is explained by your regression equation?
    4. The chief operating officer is particularly interested in understanding the fixed cost of operating the Caribbean Summer on a short cruise, which represents the expenses that would be incurred regardless of whether there are no, few, or many passengers aboard. The Caribbean Summer was built to eventually replace its sister ship the Tropical Equinox, which requires a fixed cost of about $2 million to complete a short cruise similar to those being evaluated here. What does your regression equation indicate about this issue? Does the newer Caribbean Summer have lower fixed costs than the Tropical Equinox?

  • “The Moral Dilemma: To Flee or Not to Flee?”

The discussion for this unit will place you in a situation like that in which Socrates found himself, as described in the Historical Rootspresentation. Socrates was sentenced to death but had the chance to flee Athens and survive in exile. You can discover his choice and reasoning for so choosing in the presentation, and now you will be asked to place yourself in a similar situation and make your own choice and present your reasoning.
Please read the following scenario and make your initial post responding to the discussion prompts.
Scenario: You were arrested and charged with a serious crime you did not commit. The fact is that you did NOT commit this crime; however, after standing trial, you have been found guilty by a jury of your peers and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Let’s assume the following are true:
Your trial was fair since an attorney represented you, and the jury was not coerced in their decision.
The jury’s guilty verdict was unanimous.
Your representation was fair since you were represented by a competent attorney who had adequate time and resources to develop your case.
You believe that your attorney truly had your best interest in mind.
You do not need to be concerned that you may appear guilty if you flee since that is a psychological concern, not a moral one.
The prison you will be incarcerated in is a federal penitentiary and not a federal prison with “white-collar criminals.”
Respond to one of the following:
If you had a chance to escape and flee to another country, would you be morally justified in doing so? Which ethical system (virtue ethics, Kantian, utilitarian, etc.) based on its core principles best supports your answers? Explain how that theory supports your answer.  (USLOs 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4)
In your profession, would it be morally justifiable to help a colleague avoid an unjust punishment your employer is issuing? Which ethical system (virtue ethics, Kantian, utilitarian, etc.) based on its core principles best supports your answers? What would the Code of EthicsOpen this document with ReadSpeaker docReader say you should do? Explain how that theory supports your answer. (USLOs 5.1, 5.3, 5.4)

  • The Notion of “Freedom” in the Age of Mass Immigration and Urbanization: Analysis of Primary Sources from 1880-1910

you will analyze primary sources – which are documents or artifacts generated by the events, people, and actions associated with historical phenomena – that emerge as close to the actual timeline of the historical phenomena as possible. The specific goal of this assignment is to analyze the social, political, and economic motives that influenced people’s responses to the notion of “freedom” during the age of the mass immigration and urbanization of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
    https://www.americanyawp.com/reader/18-industrial-america/jacob-riis-how-the-other-half-lives-1890/

William Graham Sumner on Social Darwinism (ca.1880s)

Helen Hunt Jackson on a Century of Dishonor (1881)

Andrew Carnegie’s Gospel of Wealth (June 1889)

Rose Cohen on the World Beyond her Immigrant Neighborhood (ca.1897/1918)

Rudyard Kipling, “The White Man’s Burden” (1899)

First, read these short documents with an eye toward how different groups/people approached the issues of immigration, American opportunities, race, and gender between 1880-1910.
Then, write a short essay that addresses the following issues:
According to American dogma, what was life supposed to be like for “all” Americans, regardless of race or ethnicity?
Using examples gleaned from these sources, what was life for ethnic minorities and immigrants really like in the US? How did their lived experiences during this period impact the rest of their lives?
Do you see examples of American racism and xenophobia at work in some of these sources? Provide examples if so.
Do you recognize any modern trends regarding how native-born Americans treat immigrants and ethnic minorities? Any parallels with modern concepts of xenophobia?
The minimum expectations are 3 full pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12-point font. Your margins should be 1”. Structure your essay so that you have an introduction with a clear thesis statement that makes an argument, 3-4 specific examples from the readings, and a short conclusion. All cited material needs to come from the documents (William Graham Sumner). NO OTHER SOURCES MAY BE USED.

  • “Exploring the Intersection of Psychology and Chronic Illness: A Critical Analysis of a Memoir”

    Chronic Illness Memoir Analysis
You will select a chronic illness memoir to read and critically consider this semester. This is an opportunity for you to learn more about a specific chronic illness that you may be particularly interested in. Additionally, the chronic illness memoir is meant to provide a first-person account of the challenges of living with a certain condition.
Your analysis should provide a brief background related to the individual and his/her diagnosis. This background should identify the chronic illness as well as highlight some of the specific challenges related to management from the individual’s point of view. After establishing the background, your critical analysis should focus on applying concepts from the course to better understand the individual’s experience of his/her illness (e.g., How does this concept further our understanding of the events described? How can we understand the individual’s thought/behavior in relation to this concept?). As part of this analysis, you might provide a detailed description of the individual’s experience of stress and his/her coping strategies including an examination of the role of social support. You might also consider the incidence of pain and different pain management techniques that were utilized. Additionally, an exploration of the individual’s encounters with health services might be appropriate. As you engage in this analysis, you should also consider whether there are points of disagreement. Is the individual’s experience different from what you might have expected given the available research? These are only a few suggestions; there are likely many opportunities for you to utilize course content in your analysis.
In short, your analysis should demonstrate a recognition of the various points of intersection between psychology and health. The analysis should be 5-7 pages in length (excluding title page and references) and utilize APA format for font, margins, spacing, citations, and references. Criteria for evaluation are listed below.
    Criteria for Evaluation
    1) Provides a brief background related to the individual and his/her diagnosis identifying the chronic illness (CCT1; 20 points)
    2) Includes some of the specific challenges related to management from the individual’s point of view (CCT2; 20 points)
    3) Applies principles of health psychology to better understand the individual’s experience of his/her illness (CCT5; 20 points)
    4) Considers whether there are points of disagreement between the individual’s experience and the available research analysis (CCT3; 20 points)
    5) Demonstrates a recognition of the various points of intersection between psychology and health (CCT4; 20 points)
