“Defining the Debate: An Argument of Definition on Controversial Concepts”
For this essay, you will be writing a 5 to 6 page argument of definition using the MLA system of citation for sources used. You may use scholarly, magazine and/or newspaper articles for evidence to support your claims, but not websites—choose highly credible sources. Each source you use will be evaluated for credibility (see Part 4 of EAA).
Before you begin selecting a claim and creating an outline for this paper, read Chapter Nine in EAA, including the sample essays at the end of the chapter. First of all, what is an argument of definition? How human beings agree on the definitions, updates, and challenges to concepts and the words that represent them is litigated by arguments. In academia, we make and revise definitions. In courtrooms, lawyers and judges negotiate definitions. We may even define ordinary things differently than others, since we are all products of disparate language and idea communities; take, for example, barbecue. Texas, Tennessee, and North Dakota are going to have very different definitions of barbecue.
An argument of definition usually follows the formula:
X is/is not Y [Ex. Protesting the National Anthem (X) is more patriotic (Y) than singing it.]
Coronavirus (X) is an airborne virus (Y).
Texting while driving (X) is reckless endangerment (Y).
Happiness (X) is a warm puppy (Y).
The most familiar way to define something is by using the definition of an authority, such as a dictionary, then citing that authority appropriately using the MLA Style system. Not all dictionaries are appropriate for college writing. Examples of dictionaries that are acceptable for college-level writing are Merriam-Webster, American Heritage, and Oxford English Dictionary. For some words or ideas, the dictionary is not an appropriate authority. Your essay must contain a formal definition discussion of at least one word that you define and discuss how it frames your thinking around a debate.
You may also define by synonym, categorization, and similar or novel properties. For example, the Greeks used several different words for “love”: storge, agape, philos, and eros. Love (X) is (Ya, Yb, Yc, Yd) for familiarity, charity, friendship, and romance respectively. This is a definition of quality or degree.
Likewise, you can define by using antonyms—what something is not. For example, in Texas, killing someone (X) is not murder (Y) if you reasonably believe you are in danger (self-defense), but this may not be true around the world. This is defining by qualification—a certain condition must be met in order to meet the definition, “murder.”
An argument of definition has several parts. First, it is based upon a claim. From the claim, you will build your argument using evidence/grounds that supports your claim. Opposing ideas or opposing arguments are called counter-claims, counter-arguments, or rebuttals. Sometimes it is better to discuss your counter-argument at the beginning of your argument [Rogerian Argument], rather than the end of your argument [Toulmin Argument]. Study and consider the concepts of warrant, backing, and qualifiers and if you should include these in your argument.
Be cautious of a definitional claim that veers into an evaluative (Country Music is/is not cool) or deliberative (what should happen in the future) argument. You must truly define a thing.
There are several ways you can approach this assignment:
Formulate a controversial/provocative definition
Ex. Owning a home is no longer an expectation in the “American Dream.”
Challenge a definition
Ex. Capital punishment is murder.
Here, the “Y” in the formula [X is Y] is a surprising reversal from the established legal definition.
Determine whether something fits into an existing definition
Ex. Should healthiness of foods take their carbon footprint into account?
Here, healthiness is being redefined as not just good for the body, but also good for the earth.
Health (X) is NOT (Y—just one’s own body, but that of other organisms and the earth) -

“The Evolution and Impact of Democracy: Exploring Justifications, Ingredients, and Real-World Examples”
In the work, you need to write an essay on a chosen topic. There is an explanation of the requirements in the task brief. My work should be devoted to all this+ epistemology of the word.
Types of Democratic Regimes: Representative, Parliamentary, Presidential, Direct
Main Ingredients of Democracy:
Fundamental Rights and Freedoms
Separation of Power (Montesquieu)
Elections
Rule of Law
The Parliament
Government and the Opposition
Political Pluralism
Public Opinion and Free Media
Prospects for Democracy: Is the world becoming more democratic?
Democratic Peace Theory: Are democracies more peaceful
But in the work you need also analyse an event or the process of modern life through the lenses of all points that are written above, you can do it in any way, but the topic should be covered. I would start with democracy by itself, its justifications, ingredients and then talking about the exmaple. I have written a bit, so you can use it in the work:
Democracy is a word that appeared many years ago and can be used to describe a system of governance where power is held by people in two possible ways: either directly or through representatives elected by the citizens. It originally comes from the Greek words “demos”-people and “kratos”-rule, which can explain Athenian democracy, where citizens were allowed to engage directly in various decision-making processes, participate in assemblies, and have their “say” in the adoption of different laws and policies. This direct type of democracy became the groundwork for the establishment of modern interpretations and concepts of democratic regimes. Subsequently, philosophers and political theorists have provided a wide range of justifications for the democratic type of governance, which has influenced the modern structures of society.
First of all, one of the main examples of justification is the social contract theory, which takes its roots from Tomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. According to them, people in their natural state set up a social contract to create a government that will ensure their security and protect their rights and freedoms together with the promotion of their well-being and prevention of crises and instabilities. John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau advocated more for democracy, as this form of governance meets the will of citizens and assists them in achieving the common good, establishing a community of free and equal people, with the consent of citizens to be governed by representatives they elected.
Talking about the event, you can focus on Hong-Kong, and its problems with democracy or democratic movements that take place there. Or you can choose another event that is suitable and better describes the situation, but its should be something global, like taking a country and analysing the processes that take place there.
In the beginning there should be a small sort of executive summary, where you will write what is work about and like an introduction.
It is very nice when there citations in the work and the words of someone. -
“Exploratory Data Analysis and Regression Analysis on a New Variant of Skin Disease: Insights and Effects of Sunlight Exposure” Title: “Exploring the Relationship Between Sunlight Exposure and Lesion Development: Regression Analysis and Over-the-Counter Medication Effectiveness” Summary: The regression analysis showed a positive correlation between the number of lesions and the duration of sunlight exposure
Dr. Megan Zobb, a key researcher within the North Luna University Medical Center, has been studying a new variant of a skin disease virus that seems to be surfacing among the North Luna University population. This variant (which has been tentatively named Painful Rash or PR), leads to the formation of surface lesions on an individual’s body. These lesions are very similar to small boils or isolated shingles sores. These PR lesions are not necessarily clustered as shingles lesions but are isolated across the body.
Insights From Initial Interviews
Megan is initiating some efforts at a preliminary analysis. She has seen 20 initial patients and made several observations about the skin disease. She wants to analyze this initial data before structuring and recommending a more encompassing study.
The signs and symptoms of this disorder usually affect multiple sections of the patient’s body. These signs and symptoms may include:
Pain, burning, numbness, or tingling, but pain is always present.
Sensitivity to touch.
A red rash that begins a few days after the pain.
Fluid-filled blisters that break open and crust over.
Itching.
Some people also experience:
Fever.
Headache.
Sensitivity to light.
Fatigue.
Pain is always the first symptom of PR. For some, it can be intense. Depending on the location of the pain, it can sometimes be mistaken for a symptom of problems affecting the heart, lungs, or kidneys. Some people experience PR pain without ever developing the rash. The degree of pain that the individual experiences is seemingly proportional to the number of lesions.
Dr. Zobb is extremely concerned that this new variant is especially challenging to the younger population, who are active and like to be outdoors. She has asked you as an analyst and statistician for some assistance in analyzing her initial data. She is not a biostatistician, so she requests that you explain the process you use and your interpretation of the results for each task.
Initial Data Analysis
Dr. Zobb has accumulated some data on an initial set of 20 patients across multiple age groups. She believes that the data suggests younger individuals are affected more than others. She wants you to complete the tasks shown here based on the data below.
For each of the following, provide a detailed explanation of the process you used along with your interpretation of the results. Submit the response in a Word document and attach your Excel spreadsheet to show your calculations (where applicable). Be sure to number each response (e.g., 1.a, 1.b,…).
Develop an equation to model the data using a regression analysis approach and explain your calculation process in Excel.
Calculate the r-square statistic using Excel. Interpret the meaning of the r-square statistic in this case.
Determine three conclusions that address the initial observations and are supported by the regression analysis.

Effects of Sunlight Analysis
In her initial observations, Dr. Zobb notices that the number of lesions that appear on a patient seems to be dependent on the amount of direct sunlight exposure that the patient receives. She is uncertain at this point why this would be the case, but she is a good experimentalist and is trying to establish some observations that have statistical validity. She has taken a limited amount of data on 8 patients and wants you to complete the appropriate analysis based on the data below (be sure to show your work):
Develop an equation to model the data using a regression analysis approach and explain your calculation process, using Excel.
Megan has a small group of three additional patients that are the same age that she wants to examine for lesions. She knows the number of minutes of continuous exposure to direct sunlight that each has experienced. Predict the number of lesions that each of these patients will have based on the regression analysis that you completed in your initial data analysis:
Patient 9 – 193 minutes.
Patient 10 – 219 minutes.
Patient 11 – 84 minutes.
Determine three conclusions based on the correlation of the number of lesions to minutes of sunlight exposure, using regression analysis.

Over-the-Counter Medication Effectiveness Analysis
Dr. Zobb wants to test several over-the-counter lotions—that is, lotions available without a prescription—that can be applied directly to the lesions. She wants to determine whether there is a difference in the mean length of time it takes these three types of pain lotions to provide relief from the pain caused by these lesions. Megan is hoping that one of these lotions might be more promising than the others. Several sufferers (with roughly the same number of lesions) are randomly selected and given one of the three medications. Each sufferer records the time (in minutes) it takes the medication to begin working. The results are shown in the table below. She asks you to answer these questions (be sure to show your work).
State the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis for this situation.
At α = 0.01, can you conclude that the mean times are different? Assume that each population of relief times is normally distributed and that the population variances are equal. Hint: Use a one-way ANOVA to solve this problem. Be certain to show your calculations and describe the process you used to solve this problem.
Determine three conclusions on the effectiveness of the medication by addressing observations or hypotheses regarding these initial tests.
