  • “Examining Social Stratification in the News: A Sociological Analysis of a Current Event”

    Social Stratification As Seen in
    News
    Sociological
analysis is most useful (and interesting) when it engages the real problems of
real people in society.  Newspapers and
periodicals afford us an opportunity to see what’s going on in the social
world, and to form social scientific ideas about these happenings.  By now, you should have a firm understanding
of the concept of social stratification and the different ways it relates to our
lives.  For this assignment you will write
a 4-5 page analysis of a stratification-related social issue that
is found in a newspaper or magazine.
Your analysis must meet all of the criteria stated in this document.  This assignment is worth 20% of your
final grade, and DUE THE LAST DAY OF REGULAR CLASSES: May 3rd.
    Your
first step is to find a recent newspaper or magazine article about some social
issue that interests you, and that relates to social stratification (divisions
of money, status and power).  The article
must be from 2018-2024.  The article must
be from a major source, such as The Washington Post, The New York Times, Time
Magazine, U.S. News & World Report, among others.  The article can be found online or in print.  You may want to run the article by me first
    before proceeding with this assignment.
The objective of this assignment is to provide students with an
opportunity to apply sociological perspectives on stratification to the actual social
    world.
    I.    Background (1 page):
    a.       Briefly describe the social stratification event or
situation presented in the article by answering the following questions:
    i.
    What is the
    event?
    ii.
    Who was
    involved?
    iii.
    Where did
    the event occur?
    iv.
    When did the
    event happen?
    v.
    What data or
statistics, if any, are presented to help describe the situation?
    b.
    When you
describe the event, do not plagiarize – describe in your own words!
    c.
    Make
sure you include a well-developed thesis statement which informs the
reader in one sentence what is the argument of your paper. In other words, what
are you claiming in this paper?  The
thesis should be placed at the end of the Background section.  Go to this link for assistance:
    http://writingcenter.unc.edu/resources/handouts-demos/writing-the-paper/thesis-statements.
    II.  Assessment
(3-4 pages):  This is the “meat” of
your paper.  Make sure this section is
well-developed and organized since your grade depends mainly on your
    sociological analysis of the article.
Discuss why the social stratification event or situation
occurred by relating it to theories
we have covered in class, or that you have read about in your text.  You need to include correct and
appropriate illustrations or examples to demonstrate your ability to apply
the theories to the real-life situation.
Include a discussion of any other concepts besides stratification
(e.g., gender, family, race) that are prominent in the article, and why
    they are important
Include an engaging and stimulating conclusion paragraph that
    summarizes your paper.  Demonstrate
evidence that you can make connections between all of the main ideas.
    Again, the paper
should be logically organized in well-constructed paragraphs/sentences, have
relevant content, and be easily understood.
There should be few or no errors in
format, sentence structure, grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.
    there is ZERO tolerance for
plagiarism, so always cite the original source if you are “borrowing”
information.  If you are citing sources, there must always be in-text citations and a
References page in APA style.  Sources must be in ABC order on the
    References page.

  • “The Transformative Nature of Femininity in the Homeric Hymn to Demeter: Exploring Girlhood, Womanhood, and Motherhood in Ancient Greek Life”

The homeric hymn to Demeter offers us in the present insight into the lives of women and girls in ancient Greek life. Girlhood, womanhood and motherhood are all represented through the Hymn. In this essay I am interested in exploring the ways the Hymn delves into the nature of feminine life in ancient Greece through the transformation of the characters Demeter and Persephone. Analyzing the transitions of women in the “Hymn to Demeter” provides a rich avenue for exploring themes of femininity, power dynamics, and the cyclical nature of life.
This is a 5-7 page philosophy thesis on a Greek tragedy. Must use direct quotes from the text, Hymn to Demeter and Helen P Foley’s The homeric hymn to Demeter: Translation, commentary, and interpretive essays.

  • “Examining the Viability and Implications of Imposing Oregon’s State Income Tax on Washington Residents for Remote Work Done in Washington State”

The paper must have a single thesis, neither trivial nor too ambitious. The paper must not (i) merely describe a situation or set of facts, or (ii) simply identify a
    problem or issue that deserves more attention. Examples of excessively ambitious theses: (a) Oregon should replace its income tax with a sales tax;
    (b) California must repeal the Proposition 13 limits on property tax increases;
    (c) A business that places cookies on the computers of customers is outside the
protections of Public Law 86-272, which generally limits an out-of-state seller’s
liability for a State income tax imposed by a customer residing in the State..
More plausible student theses: (a) The City of Salem should enact a modified
    version of the payroll tax that was rejected in a November 2023 referendum;
    (b) Oregon can and should (or cannot and must not attempt to) impose its
State income tax on Washington residents for remote done in Washington State
for an Oregon employer; (c) an assessment of the role of magistrates in the
    Oregon Tax Court.
The final paper should introduce the subject and relevant literature, then present your analysis, making sure to identify and evaluate arguments counter to
your thesis. (It is not plausible to maintain that no relevant counterarguments
have been or might be advanced, so this element of the paper should not be
dismissed in a paragraph or two.) Clearly state the topic and thesis of your paper on the first page (in addition to the abstract, although you may paraphrase
parts of the abstract) and, at the end of the paper, summarize your arguments
    in about a page.
Take care to attribute information and ideas properly—be conservative, err
on the side of citing sources, even for points you consider common knowledge
(but not, e.g., Salem is the capital of Oregon, President Lincoln was assassinated). If you received significant (but appropriate) help in researching or drafting
your paper (structuring or revising, for example, but not mere help in proofread-
ing), acknowledge that assistance. (In any event, writing style and tone should
be consistent throughout the paper, even if you compose different sections at
    different times.)
Choosing a suitable topic is often the most difficult aspect of producing a research paper, and you may find—and should allow for the possibility—that you
first choice is ultimately not promising. After that, if you have chosen your topic
well, conforming to the formatting, citation and style conventions of a traditional
paper is almost as demanding as developing your argument persuasively. That is
unavoidable, and the nature of the assignment and evaluation of your paper
do take these demands into account. Budget your time accordingly—you are
unlikely to be able to turn a substantively sound rough draft into a polished,
properly formatted, proofread and cited final draft in a day or even two.
The only sources allowed:  (i) books, articles in
refereed journals or law reviews (Journal of Finance, Northwestern Law
Review, etc.) (most sources in JSTOR and HeinOnline) (ii) traditional print
media (the Wall Street Journal, the Economist, the New York Times, Chicago
Tribune—you may research and cite only online editions of these) and
(iii) their online counterparts (https://www.bloomberg.com/) and (iv) primary
sources such as statutes, regulations and other government documents,
caselaw, financial data (stock and bond prices, for example)

  • “Addressing the Spiritual Needs of Clients with Disabilities: The Role of a Counselor”

I need you to replay to this discussion thread.
As a counselor, my role in meeting the spiritual needs of clients involves creating a safe and open environment where individuals feel comfortable exploring their spiritual beliefs, values, and experiences. This may include actively listening to their spiritual concerns, providing nonjudgmental support, and helping them integrate their spirituality into their overall mental health treatment plan. The spiritual needs of individuals with disabilities are often neglected due to misconceptions or assumptions about their capabilities or priorities.
Society may focus more on addressing physical or cognitive challenges, overlooking the essential aspect of spirituality in their well-being. There is a need for spiritual assessments among individuals with disabilities to ensure holistic care. Understanding their spiritual beliefs and practices can significantly impact their mental health outcomes, coping mechanisms, and overall quality of life. Exploring spiritual meanings in mental health assessments can be challenging due to cultural differences, communication barriers, and the subjective nature of spirituality. Clinicians must approach this aspect of assessment with sensitivity, respect, and a willingness to learn from the individual’s perspective, rather than imposing their own beliefs or assumptions. Building trust and rapport is crucial in navigating these complexities effectively.
