Annotated Bibliography for “Plato’s Allegory of the Cave: Illuminating the Journey from Ignorance to Enlightenment”
To prepare for your research paper(below is the research topic info), you will submit an annotated bibliography that contains at least four research sources. These sources should come ONLY from the GMC library databases or resources provided in class. Your completed bibliography should be at least 500 words.
1) For each source, you will first provide an MLA-formatted works cited entry for that source. Remember, the literature databases at GMC Library will do those entries for you. Refer back to week 4’s “How to Navigate GMC Library” resource as needed.
2) Then, underneath each individual source, you will provide a paragraph-length annotation. An annotation is a brief summary of the source’s main ideas or points and may also include a sentence or two about how/why you think this source is relevant to your idea or helpful for your paper. In addition, somewhere within your annotation paragraph, include a quotation from the source that you think might be useful for your eventual research paper.
View the “Annotated Bibliography Tips, Resources, and Reminders” page in this week’s resources section for more information and assistance.
Sources
You must provide at least four source entries detailing research sources you’ve found that help with the topic of your upcoming research paper.
Each source should be a critical argument on the reading you’ve chosen for your research paper. Sources that only provide biographical information or plot summary are unacceptable. Sources should be both scholarly and relevant to your topic.
Annotations
The annotation for each source entry should be a detailed paragraph in length (at least 100-150 words).
You must include a brief summary of the source. This summary should include the author’s thesis.
You must provide an explanation how this source is relevant to your planned research paper topic.
Include a brief quote within your annotation that you may consider using in your eventual research paper.
MLA Style
Your bibliography should be formatted according to MLA style.
Grammar/Mechanics
All written assignments should be mechanically and grammatically correct with proper punctuation.
Research Topic
List the author name(s) and literary work(s) you plan to write about.
Platos Allergy of the Cave
Provide a basic research question.
How does Plato’s Allegory of the Cave illustrate the concept of enlightenment and the journey from ignorance to knowledge?
Provide a clearly-labelled working thesis statement.
In Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, the journey of the prisoners from ignorance to enlightenment serves as a metaphor for the process of philosophical awakening, highlighting the transformative power of knowledge and the challenges inherent in seeking truth.
Write a proposal paragraph in which you explain why you are interested in this literature, what led you to this topic, what you hope to learn as you proceed in your research, and any possible challenges or concerns you might face as you work on this project.
I am deeply interested in the philosophical insights Plato’s Allegory of the Cave presents. The allegory explores the nature of reality, perception, and enlightenment, making it a fascinating topic to explore. I want to investigate the timeless themes of knowledge, truth, and the human condition depicted by Plato. By doing so, I hope to gain a deeper understanding of the allegory’s significance and its implications for contemporary thought. My goal is to uncover the symbolism and metaphors Plato employs and examine how the allegory resonates with modern interpretations of reality and consciousness. However, I anticipate challenges in deciphering the nuanced philosophical concepts and synthesizing various scholarly interpretations. Additionally, navigating the vast array of secondary literature on Plato’s works may pose a daunting task. Nevertheless, I am eager to embark on this intellectual journey and engage with the complexities of Plato’s Allegory of the Cave. -

Framing
Print the following PDF that includes an “a” and a circle: Cut the circle out so the paper has a circular hole in it. Use this paper as you would a viewfinder for a camera. Through the viewfinder, create three different ways of framing the “a,” where each example creates a different representation of the “a.” Explain what you think each example represents. Think about what each of the images means, do research, and then solve for possible solutions. Photograph the three best solutions and post them. Make sure each image is labeled.
Use the viewfinder paper again, but this time without the “a.”. Instead, find three images that illustrate different statements from Bruce Mau’s Incomplete Manifesto for Growth. Be sure to label each image with the number from his statements.
