  • “Philosophical Perspectives on Hiring for a Prestigious Government Position: Examining the Case of Molly and Cameron”

In this essay you have 5 tasks:
Give a clear and concise explanation of the case at hand.
Give a thorough philosophical exegesis of the relevant aspects of Pojman’s and Mosley’s theories. Also, this week you will be expected to pull ideas from previous units and previous thinkers. This week part of your grade will be based on your ability to identify and explain both readings’ key concepts.
Present an argument applying each thinker (Pojman and Mosley) and thier ideas arguments to the case at hand. This should include an argument justifying to whom each philosopher would give the job.
Present an argument explaining why one of the philosophers can be viewed as offering a more successful solution to the  case at hand in your view.  Give reasons.
In no more than one paragraph explain who you would hire and why.
    Case
Consider a new position at the very prestigious Chronus Department of the Federal Government.  The Chronus Department examines how issues from the past have an impact on current affairs, and their new position aims at recruiting a new employee to be groomed to eventually assume the position of Director because the director of the department will retire n several years.  The ideal candidate would be someone who has a degree in some area of the humanities that deals with research, history, and culture, and who has a demonstrated ability to work well with others in a leadership capacity.  This position has an incredible benefits package including, healthcare, vacations, and a pension.
The Department has narrowed its selection down to two candidates:
Molly is an African American woman from a very affluent and politically active Texas family.  She attended Yale, where she earned an undergraduate degree in Anthropology with a minor in US Civics.  After graduating, she volunteered for two years in the Peace Corps, and then took a year off to tour around Europe.
Cameron is a third-generation Irish American from a working-class family in Pennsylvania.  After high school, he spent a year working with his father in a steel mill, but then decided he wanted to go to university.  He received a scholarship to Princeton, where he graduated with a degree in US History.  In his final year of school, Cameron was elected Student Body President and implemented a union for the teaching assistants.

  • Environmental Impact of a Proposed Housing Development in My Community

This week, you will select a topic for your environmental issues in the news article. You have a wide array of choices. Remember that all human activity–every skyscraper, every park, every factory, every stadium, every golf course, every wind turbine, every parking lot, every regulation or law–has an environmental impact. That impact may be mostly positive, mostly negative, or mostly neutral. Moreover, that environmental impact won’t be the same for everyone in the community. It may be beneficial for some community members, while others are harmed, and some are relatively unaffected one way or the other.
Your task is to identify one such activity occurring in your community and to analyze it through the lens of environmental sociology. This could be something that is happening right now, something that has been proposed for the future, or something that happened in the past, but that is impacting your community today.
    Assignment Directions
For this week’s assignment, answer the following questions in at least two sentences each.
What human activity in your community will you focus upon? Example. A new housing development proposed to be built near our neighborhood. I am concerned about its environmental impact as well as its impact on the lives of local residents.
Why is it important to you? Example. It could lead to strain on natural resources, more pollution, and increased cost of living. Local residents may be priced out of the new homes.
Who stands to benefit? Example. The developers, those in the construction trades will benefit from the work to be done. Those who can afford the new homes will enjoy living in them.
Who might be harmed? Example. Those with low-incomes might be priced out of the neighborhood. Wildlife may lose habitat, those with preexisting health conditions might suffer complications.
What is your hypothesis (your tentative opinion prior to conducting research)? Example. Overall, I believe that the potential harms done to those with low incomes and preexisting health conditions outweigh the possible benefits of this new housing development. I am inclined to oppose the new housing development.

  • Title: Analyzing Balance Sheet Financial Ratios of Two Companies

After reading and understanding “Financial Ratios” from Chapter 8 in your textbook, we want to compare balance sheet financial ratios of companies — we use that information to understand them BETTER!:
You may use the Internet for this assignment.
    Try for example
    https://finance.yahoo.com/
and select separately TWO companies of which you are interested or familiar.
For EACH company … on the yahoo finance website AFTER selecting — then proceed way down on the left hand column and select “Balance Sheet” under “FINANCIALS” for finding the balance sheets for each of the TWO companies.
For which companies — you may want to consider choosing either two SIMILAR companies, such as Pfizer Inc and Johnson & Johnson, or two DIFFERENT industries, such as an airline and a car manufacturer.
    YOUR ASSIGNMENT:
Use percentages to analyze these balance sheets, and compare how well each is doing to each other AND compared to The Greasy Spoon Diner example from this chapter.
Use ratios/percentages to calculate EACH of their “balance sheet ratios” which should include:
    1) quick, 2) current, and 3) the debt ratios as described in our textbook.
THEN NEXT AND MOST IMPORTANT discuss which ratios have “improved”, by how much and their significance.
(Remember a lower ratio number – sometimes can be ‘better’ than a higher ratio number.)
