  • “The Voting Rights Act of 1965: A Turning Point in African-American Political Participation”

The Voting Rights Act of 1965
The case study in Module Five looks at the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and its impact on African-American political participation.
While the Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawed overt discrimination in public accommodations and government services, it did not directly address the most fundamental denial of African-American rights: the concerted effort to prevent African Americans from exercising their right to vote.
President Lyndon Johnson’s landslide election victory in 1964 emboldened him to seek voting-rights legislation, despite concerns that this would alienate conservative Southern Democrats whose support was needed to pass Johnson’s Great Society social programs. Television coverage of the brutal police response to peaceful voting-rights protesters in the South—most notably, the attack on protesters at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama—galvanized public support for a bill.
Southern opposition in Congress was fierce: opponents waged a 24-day filibuster* in the Senate, and Southerners in the House used every parliamentary tactic they could find to block the legislation. But it eventually passed and was signed into law on August 6, 1965, with both Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks in attendance.
The immediate impact of the Voting Rights Act was a dramatic surge in African-American political participation, with a commensurate increase in the number of African Americans elected to public office. In the longer term, the Voting Rights Act contributed to a historic realignment of the two political parties that has had a profound impact on American politics and society.

  • Title: Examining Media Coverage of a Current Event: A Comparative Analysis of Three News Sources

Journalism use what we call the 5Ws or who, what, when, where, and why. But, there is another element that is sometimes included is the elusive “H” or how an event is covered.
For this assignment, you will be examining how a particular event was covered.
You will need to select a local, state, national or international news story to analyze. You can use a physical newsprint story, an online news article, news broadcast video, or social media news source. In fact, you must use and cite 3 different sources. You can analyze how the sources covered a global event (like global warming, economics, women’s rights, social justice, etc.) or you can look at a more targeted event (like changes in South Florida like sea level rise, local elections, school zoning, labor strikes, the environment, etc.). The news event that you choose is up to you. If you do decide on a local focus, you should use different local news outlets.
    1. Select a local, state, national, or international
    event/news story to analyze.
    2. Find 3 or more media outlets that covered the same event.
    3. Make sure the coverage between the mediums is within 7-10 days.
    4. Think critically about how the different news organizations covered the event. How much space or time did the organization use? Was it a top story in all three? Who did they quote?
Did they use the same quotes or information?

  • “The Impact of a Milestone: A Personal Narrative and Comparative Analysis”

    1. You will be expected to write a narrative about a milestone in your life that had an impact on how you developed. A milestone can be any event or ascribed status.  Examples of milestones may be family dynamics, school attended, marriage, birth of a child, divorce, death of a loved one, a contracted disease, influence of a mentor, physical impairment. That is, the list is endless. Only you know what factors in your life helped to shape your present behaviors and perceptions.
    2. Analyze the milestone from the perspective of how it changed, influenced or  reinforced your life journey; and,
    3. You should then compare your reactions to research in the field. That is, did you react to the milestone as the research indicated. Or perhaps you reacted vastly different to some of the researchers’ conclusions. Your instructor thinks this is very important. If one cannot apply what one reads to one’s own life, then how is one to have the empathy needed to work with people in the human services network? The purpose of the term paper is to take learning out of classroom theoretical constructs and make it real.
The paper needs to include, minimally, five references (the required text and class hand-outs do not count). Your instructor is very liberal as to the type of resources you can use: books, magazines, newspapers, television documentaries, internet research (however, sensationalistic sources as the National Enquirer or television “reality shows” will not be accepted).  You may also interview persons who have experienced a similar milestone (this may count for no more than two of the required references).  The paper needs to be footnoted/endnoted/parenthetical citations and contain a works cited page.  (You may choose either MLA or APA). The length of the paper should be 7-10 pages.
