Reflection 3. In what way can psychological knowledge benefit society? Insight relating to societal issue (choice from 6 areas of psychology course content).
Reflection 4. Where will your psychological knowledge take you? Insight relating to career goals and professional identify.
Complete course content for Weeks 2-9
a. Note that two of the reflective journal entries for this part are free choice – you can choose any of the 6 course topics relating to areas of psychology.
b. Your fourth reflection must refer to the pre-existing knowledge and skills you discussed in Reflection 1 (attached file below), and how these may have changed over the duration of the course (or not!).
Criteria
Your reflections will be assessed against 6 key criteria:
Relevance and meaning: The psychological principles/concepts applied to the experience being reflected upon are relevant and meaningful. (20%)
Connection to course concepts: Connections are made between the experience and theory and evidence covered during the course. (20%)
Depth of reflection: Reflection describes the experience and analyses how the experience contributed to students’ understandings of self, their use of their psychological knowledge and skills, and course concepts. (30%)
Self-awareness and new insights: Explores own assumptions or biases in relationship with their interactions with others. (15%)
Quality of written expression: The written expression in the reflection is of high quality (free from spelling, grammar and language errors), and is organised and structured in a logical fashion. (10%)
Referencing: Correctly paraphrases and formats references using the APA 7th edition conventions. (5%)
Advice and resources
For these reflections, it is recommended that you use the DIEP (Describe, Interpret, Evaluate, and Plan) Strategy as a framework for examining the theories/concepts and your experiences. This framework was covered in the pre-requisite course Personal and Professional Development, and a review of the framework is provided.
Each reflection will contain four broad elements, described in more detail below (Please note: these don’t need to be headings).
1. First, you’ll need to describe an insight you have had while working through the course content. This could be an experience, a belief you hold or have held, or a situation you have encountered in which you have been able to apply your psychological knowledge or skills. This may be a personal, social, or organisational situation you have encountered, and you may have applied knowledge (principles/concepts), skills (psychology specific or transferable), or both.
Give as much detail as possible so a reader feels as though they were there with you and has a clear sense of the experience that was the basis for your reflection.
In your description, you should also identify what new learning or insight this experience inspired for you. If you are stuck, the sentence starters below may help:
From this experience I began to wonder…
This helped me to realise….
I had never noticed/considered before…
This experience taught me that…
2. Next, you’ll need to move into explaining the meaning of the new insight. How does this understanding or wondering connect with your previous experiences and the concepts and ideas we have been exploring in the course? Is it a new idea or has your previous understanding of something evolved? Was your insight influenced by previous events in your life, your personal characteristics, or particular aspects of the setting or experience? How does this help you to make sense of your experience? You are expected to draw on or refer to ideas and theory in your course material, in research literature and from other sources to support your explanation of the insight.
Once you have considered the meaning of the insight, you also need to evaluate the value or relevance of this insight. How might it benefit your learning or life?
You might start your sentences like:
A possible implication of this new idea/understanding is…
Two key take-aways from this are …
This understanding will change the way I…
This insight relates to/is consistent with/opposes (add theory/research from course)…
Having realised that, I intend to…
3. Finally, think about, or plan, what you will do with this new information. How can you apply this new knowledge or insight to your personal, social or work life? What will you do differently as a result? How might this influence your work now or in the future?
You might start your sentences like:
This [new insight] will help me in the course or program in the following ways…
As a result of this I will now [do something in my personal life]…
This has inspired me to [do something in my professional life]…

“The Enduring Significance of the Mona Lisa: Exploring the Reasons for its Endless Fascination”
Make sure your thesis is specific and emphatic at the end of your introduction. Strive for a one-sentence version of your argument/intention in writing the paper. It should contain two ingredients: an arguable claim and your reasons for believing it. It should also directly reference your artifact! Why is this artifact so meaningful to so many? Consider your thesis a road map. I need an idea where I’m heading, specifically, before I get there. Surprise is great for a road trip, not so great for a paper! Don’t forget to weave your discussion of your chosen artifact THROUGHOUT your entire paper. However, be sure that each of your body paragraphs is discussing something new and fresh, that hasn’t already be covered in a previous paragraph. Don’t get caught summarizing too much of “what happened” but rather explain the happening’s significance. Fleshing out your thesis might help you make sure this is done correctly. If you had to title each body paragraph, would the titles be different? Could those titles make their way into your thesis as your “reasons?”

“Surviving Together: Psychological Solutions for a Post-Apocalyptic Society”
Assignment topic: You are responsible for dictating how a group of post-apocalyptic survivors will endure after a global cataclysmic event, with respect to common and expected social and environmental problems.
The task is to help describe a likely and reasonable set of psychological solutions to common problems that would be encountered by a group of people in this setting. In each case, the following conditions are present:
The group is between 1000 – 1500 people strong, and includes families and people from multiple generations.
This group cannot communicate with any outgroups.
This group is diverse, and includes people from different faiths, ethnicities, and nationalities. You may assume that they all share a common language.
Natural resources are unreliable or seasonal. The group must anticipate periods of both abundance and scarcity.
The group must survive for at least 200 years, and as such, it can be expected that those who are present after 200 years will have had no direct contact with those who first arrived. That is, social learning is important, as will be social structures associated with families.
The group must be prepared for new individuals arriving who wish to enter into the group. They may also have to be prepared for individuals in the group defecting and leaving the group.
The student must address several key factors:
How the group will bond and subsequently form and maintain a shared social identity.
How the group will address issues of cooperation, defection, norms, and/or morality.
How formal or informal institutions within the group will facilitate social learning and transmission of important information with minimal loss or error.
How family units are structured, and a justification for this decision
What the social hierarchy will look like.
How the group will integrate new members (if at all). -
“Comparing and Contrasting Applied Approaches to Nonverbal Communication: A Synthesis of Chapters 7-17 in Matsumoto, Frank, & Hwang (2013)”
THE CHAPTERS ARE IN THE PDF ATTACHED BELOW !!
This assignment is due May 12 by 11:59pm (right before midnight).
This assignment will ask you to compare and contrast the various applied approaches taken by the authors in Part II of your text book (Matsumoto, Frank, & Hwang, 2013). This paper should be 4 double spaced pages or 2 single spaced pages. You are required to work on your paper independently of your classmates (i.e., no collaborations).
The basic task is to compare and contrast the approaches taken by one author in chapters Chapter 7 through Chapter 17, to a different author within those same Chapters. We’re seeing how two different practitioners use and think about nonverbal communication.
Focus your compare and contrast around these issues below, and you MUST USE these underlined headings and page numbers (you lose a point if you don’t) to help organize your paper. I have included approximate page length guidelines for each section of this assignment to give you a sense of what each section requires (based on a double spaced paper). You may go under or over a bit on these length suggestions without losing any points. Here are the 4 sections:
Intro: (appx. 1/2 page). Tell me the two Chapters you chose, and, describe which issue or fact or element of each author’s approach to nonverbal communication you found most interesting or novel. Be specific; don’t only state “I like his approach” or “his approach was most scientific.” You need to explain why. Thus “His approach was most scientific because he…” or “I like his approach because he …”
Commonalities: (appx. 1 page). Describe 2 guiding principles or other aspects of nonverbal communication that each of your two author’s chapters have in common with each other. Be specific here too, and keep it focused on the nonverbal stuff. Are there assumptions they share? How do they assess or prove things?
Differences: (appx. 1 page). Describe 2 guiding principles or other aspects of nonverbal communication that each of your author’s chapters differ from each other. Be specific…different assumptions? Models of human nature? Situational factors?
Contemporary synthesis: (appx. 1 page). Describe which of the two chapter authors you selected had the most effective application of nonverbal communication. Why do you think that is so? And finally: How might that author be helped or hindered by advances in Artificial Intelligence? Give one reason how AI might help them, and one reason why it might hinder their work. (e.g., written accounts, nonverbal behavior analysis, faking investigations, identifying killers, product marketing, diagnosing patients, or whatever -ANYTHING you can think of even if tangentially related). Make sure to back up your reason with at least one fact from either the text / book of readings / lectures from our Nonverbal Communication course. Also make sure that you keep the focus on nonverbal communication aspects, and the science of it all, as they apply to the practical issue. If you use material from Chapter 18 of the text (the synthesis chapter) make sure to cite that as the place where you got the insight; however, you need to come up with your own insights too.
Please write clear, and concisely, and in complete sentences – that will matter (read the Daryl Bem article on writing for tips on writing clearly!). The papers lose 1 point for each day late. Make sure you put your name and UB ID on your paper. Use page numbers! TURN YOUR PAPERS IN ON BRIGHTSPACE.
