The use of social media will always be a widely contested debate if social media does more harm than good in teenagers’ lives. However, one thing that is not up for debate is social media is here to stay because of widely popular apps like TikTok, Youtube, and Snapchat. What was not surprising to me was that YouTube was the most popular app, just because of the variety of topics that are covered by the platform. One thing I found surprising is that some apps show different levels of usage depending on gender and racial demographics, with TikTok being used most by African American teenage girls. Another topic discussed in the article that I did not find surprising was the evolution of apps on social media. For example, Facebook was once the most popular social media app, but with time, new social media will come in to replace an app that becomes the most popular. App usage also is different based on gender. Teenage girls tend to use TikTok and Instagram more often than teenage boys. However, teenage boys tend to use YouTube and Twitch more often than teenage girls. I think this is become TikTok and Instagram is more interactive than apps like Youtube and Twitch. Parents have become concerned over many issues with social media, such as explicit content made easily available and time management issues teenagers seem to have while using social media. Parental awareness is crucial for monitoring the content their children are being exposed too. Never the less, there is a disconnection that parents and teenagers seem to have when it comes to social media usage.

  • Legal Liability and the Gig Economy: Analyzing Agency Law and Recommending Steps to Limit Liability for Ride-Sharing Companies

    Overview
In this assignment, you analyze a business scenario to summarize the principles of agency law, recommend steps to limit liability and determine the circumstances under which a business might be liable for employee conduct.
Ride-sharing companies are largely hailed as the advent of the gig economy, which is the idea that people do not work as permanent employees for one employer but instead work in a labor market characterized by short-term contracts or freelance work. While creating a new type of entrepreneurship for individuals, a gig economy raises a host of new legal questions about the law of agency for companies utilizing gig workers.
    Scenario
Widgets operates a ride-sharing business with over 100 drivers. Your boss has asked you to evaluate Widgets’ legal exposure for the conduct of its drivers. Several drivers have had accidents, and one driver was arrested for driving while intoxicated when providing a ride for a company client. Widgets has no policy for hiring or checking backgrounds and, for some drivers, allows the use of four company vehicles for transporting large groups.
    Instructions
Consider the above scenario and complete a 3-4 page memo in which you do the following:
Summarize the main principles of agency law relevant to the scenario.
Identify and accurately explain the liability to the business in the scenario by considering each of the following factors:
    The scope of employment.
Agents acting as an employee versus an independent contractor.
When agents commit an intentional tort versus negligence.
Recommend 2-3 significant steps that the business should take to limit its legal exposure related to driver conduct. Support your recommendation.
Note: Remember, you are demonstrating your understanding of the law, so explain the law first and then answer the questions of the assignment. Be informative and show what you know! Provide references from credible and reputable legal sources.
    Requirements
    Your memo should:
Be typed, double-spaced, in Times New Roman font (size 12), with 1-inch margins on all sides.
Include a source page (not a part of the page count requirement) and have a cover page that uses the following format:
    LEGAL MEMORANDUM
    TO: Boss
    FROM: Your Name
RE: Legal Liability and the Gig Economy

written a detailed outline before you begin writing.
    A
In chapter 3 of A Room of One’s Own, Virginia Woolf says that a woman born with
a gift of poetry in the sixteenth century was an unhappy woman, a woman at
strife against herself” (para. 10). What were the characteristics of such a strife
then and what were its implications for the woman? To what extent does Woolf’s
characterization apply to “a woman born with a gift of poetry” in the 21st century?
    B
Analyze “Boys and Girls” by Alice Munro from a gender studies perspective. You
may ask one or more of the following questions to generate ideas for your
    analysis:
    a) How does the work demonstrate the operations of patriarchy socially,
    politically, economically, or psychologically?
    b) How does the work play with traditional gender categories, revealing the
biases and limitations of traditional definitions of gender?
    c) How does the protagonist either resist or internalize patriarchal
    oppression?
    C
Franz Fanon makes a curious reference to “a multitude of sermonizers,
counselors, and ‘confusion mongers’” in paragraph 8 of “On Violence.” He
limits these questionable figures to capitalist societies. Examine our present
cultural, political, religious, and general circumstances. Who and what are the
modern equivalents of sermonizers, counselors, and “confusion mongers” in
our popular culture? Where do you find them, and what do they propound?
What is their message? What kinds of confusion do they seem to spread?
    D
The most obvious opposition to Martin Luther King Jr.’s views on nonviolence
and respect for the law is Franz Fanon in his “On Violence.” Examine their
essays to see whether or not you can find common ground between them. For
example, how would Fanon’s dichotomies of the colonized and the colonizer
inform you about the forces at work In Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from
Birmingham Jail?” Imagine Fanon and King discussing matters of politics,
government, religion, or thought. What might they have agreed on, and where
    would they have diverged?

The movie Crimes and Misdemeanors seems almost obsessed with injustice in the world. Some of this has to do with the fact that the universe seems morally indifferent: the wicked flourish. Some of it has to do with personal relationships; things can work out in painful ways that make no sense.
In the Seder scene (roughly begins at the 1:10:21 mark), Aunt Mae and Judah’s father argue about whether the universe is morally indifferent [Background note: Judah visits the old house where he grew up and then begins reminiscing]. Citing various scenes in the movie, explain what you take to be Judah’s opinion on the matter. (It may not be that Judah has one simple stance on the issue. It may even be that his view is fluid and changes throughout the film.)
    GUIDELINES
Word count: 250-500 words (though it’s ok if you go over a little, JUST NO MORE THAN 1 page)
DO NOT write a formal essay (DO NOT include an introduction and a conclusion); begin with a direct statement of what you think Judah’s opinion is on the universe having a moral structure, this means you are making a claim (a statement that asserts something), after your statement, provide various examples/scenes to substantiate your position, provide explanations for the scenes you reference meaning to explain to the reader how the scenes you mention support your initial claim.
