  • “Exploring Modern Art: A Comparison of Two Artists Through Museum Visits” “Exploring Modern Art: A Comparative Analysis of Two Artists at the MCASD”

    Field Assignment: Where to Go
Many arts organizations have launched new online platforms and expanded their virtual collections during the last several years. You definitely have options if you would like to “visit” a museum virtually for your final assignment.
However, I encourage you to visit a museum in person for your field assignment if that is feasible for you! I have included some information for you in this module listing what is currently available.
You are welcome to base your assignment on your experience at a different museum that features modern art if you have been traveling or if you are located in a different community.
I recommend going to the new La Jolla branch of the MCASD if you haven’t already done so: (https://mcasd.org/) Links to an external site.It recently was expanded and renovated and the new space is really incredible. The San Diego Museum of Art (https://www.sdmart.org/Links to an external site.) and the Oceanside Museum of Art (https://oma-online.org/Links to an external site.) are also open and have wonderful collections. The Balboa Park Sculpture Garden next to SDMA is open to the public and a free option where you can find some examples of Modern art (https://www.sdmart.org/may-s-marcy-sculpture-garden/Links to an external site.). Some really powerful contemporary photography is on view at MOPA: https://mopa.org/Links to an external site.
The Timken Museum is free to visit and has a small but wonderful collection.
Be sure to bring your student ID if you go to a museum! The San Diego Museum of Art is now free to college students. Other museums will have a student discount. Galleries are free to visit but tend to have limited hours.
    Assignment Instructions:
For your essay, you will once again be comparing and contrasting the work of two artists. This time you will pick a work of art that you discover at a museum or gallery (either online or in person) and compare and contrast it with another work of art that you have studied in this class. You may select any artist that has been included in your textbook or in previous discussion boards to compare and contrast with the artist you choose to research from your museum visit.
You have written a comparison essay in this class before so you should have some insight into the process.
    Some things to consider:
How do the works of the two artists relate?
What stylistic similarities and differences can you identify?
What ideas do you see expressed in their artwork?
Can you relate their works to art movements you’ve studied in this class? How does the artwork reflect the time period in which the artists lived?
Just do your best! This is simply an opportunity for you to revisit the work of an artist that you’ve learned about this semester and relate it to something new you discover. I encourage you to also reflect on your own experience visiting a museum (virtually or in person) in this essay.
Your essay should be about three pages (double-spaced in MLA format) and must include a works cited! Be sure that you cite your sources and don’t just copy and paste from online sources as your work will be flagged for plagiarism. If you notice that it is a high match, please revise your work and resubmit so that you don’t lose points. I want to read your ideas about the artwork as well as the results of your research!

  • Title: Rethinking GDP: Measuring Happiness and Well-being in the Modern Economy

GDP is the sum of all income earned in a country during a year. Alternatively, it can be thought of as the value of all production in an economy during a year. But do income and production measure happiness? The way we measure GDP can both overstate and understate people’s happiness and well-being. It understates economic activity and well-being when it doesn’t take into account production that is not exchanged in a market (grandma providing free baby-sitting) and leisure time. It overstates well-being when two otherwise identical activities are measured the same even though one produces more pollution.
Start your discussion by responding to these questions:
Should we continue to measure GDP as we do now? After all, the current way of measurement has been used over time, so we can make historical comparisons.
Are there problems with GDP that should be fixed? If you don’t think GDP should be changed, explain your reasoning. If you think it should be changed, what changes would you recommend, and why?

  • “Taking a Stand: Crafting an Original Argument on a Critical Social Issue” “The Battle for Justice: Exploring the Origins and Solutions of the Black Lives Matter vs. All Lives Matter Debate”

Develop a 1-2 sentence thesis statement for your Essay 3 prompt. Thesis Review If you need a reminder about thesis statements, please review the information below: What is a Thesis Statement?
A thesis statement is a sentence that states the topic and purpose of your paper. A good thesis statement will direct the structure of your essay and will allow your reader to understand the ideas you will discuss within your paper.
Where does a Thesis Statement go?
Your thesis should be stated somewhere in the opening paragraphs of your paper, most often as the last sentence of the introduction. Often, a thesis will be one sentence, but for complex subjects, you may find it more effective to break the thesis statement into two sentences.
More Tips: Your thesis statement should be one to two sentences.
Your thesis statement should clearly present the main idea of your essay and make some kind of assertion. The thesis should be a debatable claim.
Your thesis should not make an “announcement” about what your essay will cover. Instead, it should just present your assertion. For example, a thesis like this makes an announcement: In this paper, I will persuade you to vote for candidates who support education reform.
Instead you might write: Because our education system is in need of reform to better serve students of color, we should vote for candidates who are willing to make the necessary changes.
Before you submit, think about the following:
Can your thesis be more concise/clear
Are you using the best word choices
Is the thesis narrow enough to cover a 6-8 page paper
    Is it grammatically correct
This term, we are uniquely positioned, as we are in the midst of dual pandemics: racism/hate crimes and COVID-19, and we just transitioned to a new presidential administration. To engage in these conversations this unit, you will choose an issue that is critical to the current social and political climate and argue your position in a sustained research paper. The assignments will allow you to delve deeply into an issue about which you deeply care and offer your take on the issue’s context, history, and arguments. This unit is designed to sharpen critical thinking, analysis, research, rhetorical analysis, and argumentation skills as well as keep us engaged as informed voters.
    Reading and Writing Skills
Over the course of this assignment, we will continue to focus on key academic reading and writing skills, such as summarizing and citing sources. Unlike previous assignments, I will not be giving you the sources to use in your argument. You will be doing your own research and finding credible and reliable sources. The other reading and writing skill we will be continue to work on with this assignment is responding with your own argument. As we have discussed in the the previous essay prompt, academic scholars do not write in a vacuum—their arguments are typically in response to other arguments about the same topic. You will be doing exactly that for this assignment as you support your claims but also consider counter claims. Focusing Questions
Now that you briefly understand what we are doing with this assignment and why we are doing it, I will now introduce our guiding questions. What is one specific social issue that is important to you and your community? How has this issue been presented historically? What would you like to argue/what change would you like to inspire as related to the issue?
