  • “Creating a Plan for Supporting Multilingual Learners in English Language Acquisition”

    Exam Content
Earlier in the course, you learned about laws and policies that have affected EL education. This week, you investigate language acquisition elements, including theories of how people learn language, the stages ELs go through to acquire a language, and rules for learning a language known as elements of language. As a teacher, each of these is key for building a plan for educating multilingual learners in your classroom.
    Scenario
Imagine you are one of five teachers who teach 1st grade. Your team has recently received an influx of multilingual (EL) learners. As the teacher with the most experience with these types of learners, your principal has asked you to create a plan for helping these learners reach English language proficiency. This plan will involve using language theory, using the stages of second language acquisition, and incorporating elements of language.
    Preparation
    Research the following:
Theories of language acquisition (e.g., behavioral, cognitive, nativist, and interactionist)
    Stages of second language acquisition
Elements of language (e.g., phonetics, phonology, morphology, lexicon, semantics, syntax, and pragmatics)
    Assessment Deliverable
Create a 3- to 5-page plan that addresses the elements, theories, and factors that influence language acquisition that you and your team will follow to support your multilingual (EL) learners in acquiring English language proficiency.
Include the following in your plan:
    Theories of language acquisition
Describe 1 or more theories you will use when planning weekly instruction and how it will benefit your ELs. Provide a rationale for your chosen theory or theories.
    Stages of second language acquisition
Explain how you will determine which stage of second language acquisition each of your ELs are in.
Explain how you will plan to teach your ELs based on each stage of second language acquisition. For example, individual time for ELs will be planned by each teacher, teachers will work with small groups by language acquisition level weekly, and objects will be labeled in all classrooms for pre-production stage learners.
    Elements of language
Define each element of language (phonetics, phonology, morphology, lexicon, semantics, syntax, and pragmatics) in a way that a parent/caregiver could understand.
Provide an example of how you will teach each element of language to your 1st-grade ELs.
    Reflection process
Detail how you will consistently reflect on each EL’s progress.
Describe how you will assess their progress using the stages of language acquisition and the elements of language.
Explain the process you will use to adjust instruction for students who are not progressing.
Describe communication strategies you will employ to keep parents/caregivers informed on their child’s language progress.

    Quoting Evidence from Sources
Quoting is one of the ways you can incorporate evidence from a source into your research paperor other writing assignment.
Quoting means using the exact words of the source, rather than a summary or paraphrase in yourown words. This is also called a direct quote.
To incorporate a direct quote effectively, you need three things:
    1.    Introduction
This tells the reader that a quote is coming up.
    2.    Quoted text
This is the actual text reproduced exactly as it appears in the original source.
    3.    Explanation of relevance
This tells the reader why the quoted text is important for your argument.
In the following example, the introduction is marked (1), the quoted text is marked
    (2)  and the explanation of relevance is marked (3). (The numbers are just forclarification; you would not use them in an actual writing assignment.)
    (1)  In the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson includes a list of god-givenrights, including (2) “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”
    (3) These words indicate an important shift in emphasis from the First ContinentalCongress of 1774, which had issued a declaration of rights in which stated that thecolonists were entitled to life, liberty and property.
    How to Format Direct Quotes
Brief quotes should be set off from the surrounding text with double quotation marks as inthe example above. If your quoted text is more than four lines, use a block quote. A div begins on a new line, doesn’t have quotation marks, and is indented about one inchfrom the left margin.
Quoted evidence must come from reliable sources and be properly cited. In additionto using direct quotes, you can also iincorporate evidence by
    paraphrasing or summarizing.

  • “The Development of Richard and the Themes of the Migrant Crisis in Jenny Erpenbeck’s Go, Went, Gone”

It should include the following: 1) an
introduction with a clear and contentious thesis statement; 2) body paragraphs
with topic sentences framing the paragraph’s guiding argument, evidence from
the text (specific examples and quotations), and close reading analysis; and 3)
a short conclusion summarizing the paper’s main points.
The paper must be properly MLA
formatted, including a Works Cited page.
    Choose one of the following
prompts and write an argumentative essay of roughly 1000-1200 words.
    1. In Jenny Erpenbeck’s novel Go, Went,
Gone, the development of the main character, Richard, is one of the ways the
author conveys her major ideas about the ongoing migrant crisis in Europe.
Using close reading analysis of specific examples and devices, explore how
Richard changes (and/or does not change) over the course of the novel and how,
in turn, this development relates to Erpenbeck’s themes and message.
    2. As with several of the texts we’ve read
this term, Go, Went, Gone explores the theme of complicity. In this
case, Erpenbeck’s novel seems to send a clear message that to remain passive
and silent in the face of history is a diminishment of one’s own humanity.
Argue this message by providing close reading analysis of the novel’s extensive
    use of symbolism.
    3. In many ways, Go, Went, Gone
explores and questions the notion of “home.” Using close reading analysis of
specific examples and literary devices, interpret and explain the novel’s
various representations of home, from an actual place to an emotional construct,
from a national idea to a legal concept.
