  • “The Unintended Legacy: A Narrative from Deborah Lacks’ Perspective”

Assignment 1: Narrative based on Non-fiction
In The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, the author reveals that Henrietta did not wish to donate her cells for research and that the family was not exactly pleased with the manner in which her body was used for science. Choose one of the following people from the text and write a narrative from his or her point of view. You should include some of the facts and information from the text, but mostly this will be a fictionalized account of what happened based on your imagination.
    Character Perspectives:
    Deborah Lacks (Henrietta’s daughter)
    David Lacks (Henrietta’s husband)
If you need help getting started, consider the following ideas as food for thought:
    1) What time period do you wish to set your story (when Henrietta was living or after her death?)
    2) Perhaps you’d like to write from Deborah’s perspective, growing up without her mother and later learning about her HeLa cells.
    3) Consider writing from David’s perspective as he realizes his wife is dying or when he finds out that science has taken her cells without his knowledge or approval.
There are many more ways to approach this assignment; feel free to be creative based on the text. Since this is a narrative, your paper will be assessed on descriptive elements such as dialogue, interesting adjectives, vivid verbs, figurative language, etc. You’ll want to consider the elements of a narrative (setting, characterization, plot, style).

  • Title: Root Cause Analysis of Medicare Fraud in the Case of Maryland Health Care Provider Sentenced to 10 Years in Federal Prison

Throughout this course, you have examined occurrences of the types of health care noncompliance, fraud, and abuse that commonly take place in the context of the regulatory environment in which organizations must operate. To ensure the best chance of avoiding intentional and unintentional noncompliance, health care administrators should devise and adopt a risk management plan that identifies, assesses, and analyzes the risks and tolerances inherent in the organizations processes and operations.
One of the crucial aspects of a risk management plan involves strategies for actions that should be taken in the event of a violation or breach of any nature. These mitigating actions should be followed up with remediation aimed at finding the causes leading up to the incident. This is where root cause analysis comes into the picture.
Root cause analysis is a structured, retrospective analysis of events leading up to the noncompliant event. By developing an organization-wide policy for conducting root cause analyses that is adaptable to specific operations, a cause might be determined, and preventive actions and solutions developed.
In this assessment, you examine a case of fraud and try to determine why and how it happened.
Read Maryland Health Care Provider Sentenced to 10 years in Federal Prison for Health Care Fraud Resulting in Patient Deaths from the United States Attorney’s Office.
    https://www.justice.gov/usao-md/pr/maryland-health-care-provider-sentenced-10-years-federal-prison-health-care-fraud
Use the Five Whys to conduct a root cause analysis to determine why the Medicare fraud occurred and Timothy Emeigh’s participation in the case.
Write a 700- to 1,050-word analysis that identifies and evaluates the root cause for Medicare fraud in this case.
    Include the following:
Articulate the “Five Whys” for this case and provide an explanation for each.
Speculate how and why Mr. Emeigh participated in the scheme.
Explain what you, as an administrator, might have done to prevent this from happening.
Recommend risk management strategies the organization can utilize to prevent this and similar types of events from occurring in the future.
Cite your sources according to APA guidelines.
    Submit your report and article.

  • “Adapting Text for Different Genres: A Reflective Essay” The Role of AI in Successful Adaptations Title: The Impact of AI on Successful Adaptations: A Brief Overview

    Reflective Essay
    Submission length: 1000 Words
The purpose of this task is to develop skills in transforming, adapting and editing text-types for different genres or contexts of delivery–and to reflect on the editorial skills needed to make these transitions. Adaptation is a skill that all editors require, particularly in the digital age, and this assignment asks you to think carefully about how and why editors (and writers) need to modify texts for different audiences–and the sorts of decisions they make as they engage in the process of adaptation.
The source I find to apply on this editing project is :
Everything to Know About the 2024 Met Gala: Theme, Hosts, and More
    link: https://www.vogue.com/article/everything-to-know-met-gala
    Medium of delivery
For this assignment, you will need to produce a 1000-word reflective essay that includes:
a description of the short text you have chosen, its medium (where you found it: newspaper, book, internet, etc.), target audience, and purpose. In other words, who was the original text written for? Where was it published, and what effect was it meant to have on its readers? (approx. 100 words)
a description of how you developed this short text into a new genre/format. What editorial decisions did you make? Did you change the language, level of formality, tone, etc. Did you punctuate differently or use more images for effect? Did you play around with colour and font? Why? What do these changes say about the new genre? (approx. 300 words–or 1/3 of the assignment)
a reflection/conclusion on how the textual elements (language, style, formatting) of each genre differ and what must be considered in making successful adaptations.  (approx. 300 words–or 1/3 of the assignment)
the newly adapted text. Please note the remaining 300 words of the task  (the final 1/3 of the assignment) are allocated to this work, but you might not necessarily write 300 new words. We are allowing word count for the editing effort as well. If you do not use the full 300 words in this section and wish to apply additional words to other sections, that is fine–provided that the assignment does not exceed 1000 words–but not necessary.
    Topic of Reflection
Unlike previous assignments, where you were considering how editors intervene in the text production process, for this assignment you must revise and edit as a form of adaptation. This assignment asks you to adapt a recent short piece of professional or public writing (tweet, social media post, meme, etc.) from one context to another. Your chosen text should have a recent publication date, i.e., no earlier than January 1 2024, and it should be a short piece of writing, to make the adaptation process easier. The focus here is not so much on the writing, since most of the writing has already been done, but on editing the existing text for a new genre.
For example, you might draw on a series of social media posts to craft a short speech or media release/public announcement on the same topic. Or, you could adapt a short section/paragraph of a professional article into a poster that features mainly images. Or you might adapt a paragraph of your favourite book into a format suitable for children. You might adapt a Facebook post into a tweet or an email into a text.
You should use the information from the original source for the content of your submission, but you can work creatively with additional visual, design, or other elements to achieve the adaptation. You may also need to reword the original text slightly (or change its tone) to ensure the content is appropriate for the new genre.
You should consider, too, whether/how AI technology can be used to help editors adapt texts across genres. Can a machine replace a human being? How might editors use AI for purposes of adapting text from one genre to another? What might they ask AI technology to produce on their behalf? You might include these considerations in the reflections section (on what must be considered in making successful adaptations) or in a brief concluding statement. There is no need for an elaborate discussion. One or two sentences will suffice to demonstrate your awareness of AI in the editing process.

  • “Exploring the Intersection of Institutional History and Art Theory” Essay 1: The Role of Institutions in Shaping Artistic Production Institutional history plays a crucial role in shaping artistic production. Artistic institutions, such as museums, galleries,

As with the first assignment, there are three short essays to write, about 300 words each.
Unlike the first assignment, they are not all directly based on images, but also bring in some of the institutional history and art theory we have been discussing. All three of these subjects could (and have) take entire books to explore, so you should have plenty to say. Try to keep your essays concise and grounded in specific artworks and/or issues.
As before, you should have all the material you need from your class notes and the required readings, but you are welcome to explore the optional readings or other sources in writing your essays. (Of course, do not copy anyone else’s writing, even an AI bot. If you include any direct quotes, please cite your source.)
