Students are expected to use three external sources (journal articles, website content, video, etc.) along with the class textbook. The textbook links to an external site. does not count as an external source.
The chapter I want the Essay to be about is Chapter 15, Religion. I attached the paper that I already wrote, but I need you to re-write it, make it sound better, and include the sources because I didn’t do that.
I have already found 3 sources that you can use, besides the book, they are:

“The Complexities of Identity: A Thematic Analysis of Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel”
Paper 2: Thematic Threads
With poetry, we discussed the issue of theme and worked with the tricky concept of
understanding what a poem means. In longer fiction, we are able to engage with fleshed-out
characters who live their lives and make their own decisions. We’ve met a number of people, but
do we really know them? Is it possible to make a judgment about a person who only exists in our
imaginations?
In 5 pages, focus your analytical eye on applying a theme to a character. Choose a character
from one of the three longform texts we’ve read (Ms Marvel) and
present a close reading which illustrates the way you feel s/he ought to be read. As before, this is
a thesis-driven assignment. Make a clear statement and support yourself with evidence from the
text. As was the case with Paper 1, it is expected that this paper will contain no outside sources.
Your argument will be entirely your own, rather than a summary of another scholar’s analysis.
While preparing the subject of your analysis, you may want to consider the questions you’ve
already been asking. If we want to make a statement about Kamala’s relationship with her
religion, which passages illustrate that statement? Where should we look to find a motive for
Colonel Joll’s behavior? What sections will help us explain Rachel’s motivations? Dig into the
language and tell us why we should agree with your assessment.
Remember to parse your source text for everything it has to offer. Relate your interpretation of
the source material, and be sure to think critically about the needs of people who disagree with
yourself as well. A strong thesis can be argued against.

“The Unjust Treatment of Sylvia Rivera: A Trailblazing Hispanic American Activist and Transgender Rights Advocate”
You will research and write about a Hispanic American who contributed heavily to society but, due to their identity, suffered injustice. Below is a list of names to consider. As you will see, some sacrificed their lives, others their reputation or their mental well-being, etc.
There are two restrictions for your topic: 1) the assignment is limited to Hispanic Americans who made their primary contributions during 1877-1976 (e.g., although Dolores Huerta continued her advocacy well after 1976, the majority of her political contributions came during the 1950s and 60s); and, 2) please research someone relatively unfamiliar, so no reports on Cesar Chavez. Also, remember that racial construction is politically and sociologically complicated. A wide range of racial identities are available to choose from.
Please explore the breadth and depth of the individual’s contributions to society, the injustices to which they were subjected, and what we can learn today from their life and its impact on U.S. history.
On the sources, please find sources that are common to use because I will double check where these sources are from. I want to make sure it will be easier access for me to see as well. Be mindful of the sources. I highly prefer the more common sources to use for every person to use and fact-check on when it comes to this assignment.
