  • Title: Voice and Counseling Skills Reflection for a Client with Vocal Nodules: A Case Study

    Voice & Counseling
    Skills Reflection
    Case Study
    Beverly was a 45-year-old
woman who was an elementary school teacher for 20 years.  She loved
teaching, and she loved children. She was a single mother struggling
financially to support 14-and 17-year-old daughters. She was active in her
church and sang in the choir.  She was, in many ways, typical of many
adults with vocal nodules: she had a job that required excessive use of her
voice, sometimes with vocal abuses such as yelling to children on the
playground, and she had a variety of stresses in her life from financial
stresses from trying to raise two teenage children. Beverly tried to reach the
extremes of her vocal range during choir practice, choice performances and
singing around the house, and she had little time to take care of herself and
relax. She felt guilty when she tried to do something for herself even though
    she felt chronically tense.
    Besides symptomatic voice
therapy and vocal hygiene (conversation) education, the SLP tried to encourage
Beverly to learn how to take care of herself. She eventually began to
appreciate that if she “used herself up and burned herself out,” she would
not be able to continue teaching or singing, and she may have difficulty using
her voice when trying to communicate with her family and friends while teaching
and in all other environments. As she learned to balance her life a little
better, some of her generalized tension, as well as her vocal fold tension,
    began to diminish.

  • “Justifying Budget Proposals and Aligning with Organizational Goals: A Nurse Leader’s Guide” “Maximizing Profitability and Fiscal Success: A Comprehensive Plan for Managing Labor, Equipment, and Services in Healthcare”

I have attached the grading rubric, guiding questions and the original paper to use as a reference to write this paper
Negotiating budgets and communicating financial needs to stakeholders are vital skills for nurse leaders. Given today’s numerous constraints on funding and a highly competitive environment, the ability to win support for your budget proposals hinges on being able to present a compelling argument based on well-documented needs, accurate financial information, and a justifiable business case.
This assessment provides an opportunity for you to examine the mission and goals of a health care organization, in order to justify a budget proposal. A persuasive argument requires thoughtful justification and rationale for the expenses required to support your proposal. A proposal that supports the organization’s mission and goals strengthens your argument and is much more likely to get you what you need.
In every health care organization, dollars are scarce and the budget process is carefully scrutinized at every level. Nurse leaders must be business-savvy. They must be able to make a compelling case for why every budget line item and every dollar on a budget supports the mission and goals of the unit and the organization. This means that nurse leaders must be able to think in terms of the business of health care and be able to present a business proposal or plan with thorough and thoughtful justification and rationale for expenses. The business plan should present accurate, factual data and costs, and should also be concise and clearly organized.
The financial department has reviewed your unit’s operating budget and has asked you to submit an executive summary that provides support for your budget proposal. Your challenge is to position your unit favorably within an environment of competing demands for limited funding.
As you prepare to complete this assessment, you may want to think about other related issues to deepen your understanding or broaden your viewpoint. You are encouraged to consider the questions below and discuss them with a fellow learner, a work associate, an interested friend, or a member of your professional community. Note that these questions are for your own development and exploration and do not need to be completed or submitted as part of your assessment.
Consider the operating budget you developed in Assessment 2.
How would you justify your budget to executive leaders?
How would you link your budget to the organization’s goals and objectives?
How would you propose to meet productivity goals while staying within budget?
The following resources are required to complete the assessment.
Note: The following requirements correspond to the grading criteria in the assessment scoring guide. Be sure that your executive summary addresses each point, at a minimum. You may also want to read the Guiding Questions: Budget Negotiations and Communication [DOCX] Download Guiding Questions: Budget Negotiations and Communication [DOCX]to better understand how each criterion will be assessed.
Write an executive summary of the operating budget you prepared in Assessment 2 that makes a compelling case for why funds should be allocated for your budget.
Outline a strategic plan that ensures profitability and fiscal success.
Present a plan to meet staff productivity goals, while staying within budget parameters.
    Justify equipment and service costs.
Analyze department, unit, or project alignment with the organization’s mission and goals.
Write clearly and concisely, using correct grammar and mechanics.
Integrate relevant and credible sources of evidence to support your assertions, correctly formatting citations and references using current APA style.
By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:
Competency 1: Design an operating budget that incorporates variances or discretionary spending.
Outline a strategic plan that ensures profitability and fiscal success.
Competency 2: Develop a plan for managing the labor force, within the parameters of the budget and productivity.
Present a plan to meet staff productivity goals, while staying within budget parameters.
Competency 4: Determine the equipment and services needed to maintain seamless patient or client care.
    Justify equipment and service costs.
Competency 5: Apply financial principles to a strategic plan for achieving organizational goals and fiscal success.
Analyze department, unit, or project alignment with an organization’s mission and goals.
Competency 6: Communicate effectively with diverse audiences, in an appropriate form and style, consistent with applicable organizational, professional, and scholarly standards.
Write clearly and concisely, using correct grammar and mechanics.
Integrate relevant and credible sources of evidence to support your assertions, correctly formatting citations and references using APA style.

  • Title: Exploring My Black Culture Through the Words of Richard Rodriguez

describe my culture (black) and provide quotes from Richard Rodriguez. Does Rodriguez make a valid point by asserting that, each one of us, as Americans, is made up of many different cultures, and not just of the cultures we inherited from our parents or ancestors? If that assertion is true, what different cultures make up your identity? (Support your answer with specific concrete examples: people, foods, music, etc.). Last, is Rodriguez ignoring the subject of racism with his assertion, as if it does not exist?

    Due Dates
The deadline for submission of this assignment is the end of Week 6 (Tuesday, 11:59 PM Eastern). The Case Study Project, Revised Draft is to be submitted and graded as a separate assignment.
    Connection to other Course Assignments
The Case Study Project is the culminating assignment, where you will tie together all of the information and ideas from the course.
All of the reading, writing, thinking, and discussing that you have done over the past several weeks have led up to this assignment.
Step 1: Submission (earn up to 100% of the possible points for the assignment)
Your submission should include all of the following components:
    Content
Describe a “real life” instance of your selected social issue in a professional or a personal setting.
Discuss your perspective on your selected social issue, including the reasons for your viewpoint.
Discuss how your core values inform or influence your perspective on your selected social issue.
Demonstrate that you are really thinking about your issue—don’t settle for easy answers, don’t pretend that conflicting evidence doesn’t exist, and don’t feel that you have to take an either-or position.
Discuss the complexities of your selected social issue. For example, do not just conclude that using academic language is always good, or that government surveillance is always bad, or that wealth automatically leads to health. Think about the intricacies of these issues and how they play out in everyday life.
    Organization
Include an introductory paragraph, where you clearly outline a “real-life” instance of your social issue and you give a thesis statement that indicates your perspective (see learning resource: Writing Your Introduction for an example).
Include 3-5 body paragraphs where you include details, examples, and quotes from at least three of the course readings and two additional readings to help you develop and support your key points (see learning resource: Writing Your Body Paragraphs for an example).
Include one body paragraph where you discuss how your core values inform or influence your perspective on your selected social issue (see learning resource: Writing Your Body Paragraphs for an example).
End your essay with a concluding paragraph where you restate your thesis, summarize your key points, and leave the reader with the “so what?” (see learning resource: Writing Your Conclusion for an example).
    Language Choices
As a writer, you are free to decide how you use language, keeping the following in mind:
style: your language choices should result in a consistent writing style that is purposeful and aligned with your goals
readability: your language choices should ensure that your ideas are clear and easy to follow
When composing your paper, think about the conventions for academic writing, including:
punctuation: this includes things such as recommended use of commas, colons, and apostrophes.
word-level accuracy: this includes things such as capitalization, spelling, word-tense, and usage.
sentence-level accuracy: this includes things such as sentence boundaries, subject-verb agreement, and pronoun-antecedent agreement.
Take time to review your language choices after you’ve written your essay. Think about your goals for the style of this essay and your own writing habits (like using “text-speak,” omitting capitalization, or writing sentence fragments). Revise as necessary to accomplish your style and readability goals.
Reading your paper aloud is helpful technique when reviewing your language choices for style and readability.
    Sources and Documentation
To earn the maximum possible points on this assignment, use and cite at least five sources:
Use and cite three of the assigned course readings on your selected issue (language and power; freedom and security; health and wealth). Sources from the assigned readings do not require a reference list for this assignment.
Use and cite two more sources (course readings or otherwise). Sources that are not from the assigned readings must be listed at the end of the paper on a reference page. List author, year of publication, title, and URL. Full APA format is not required for the reference page.
In-text citations for all sources should be in APA style.
These examples show options for citing a paraphrase:
This is a paraphrased sentence (Author, year).
    Author (year) explains that ….
These examples show options for citing a quote:
A recent study showed that “this is the quoted passage” (Author, year, p./para. number).
Author (year) explains, “this is the quoted passage” (p./para. number).
Note that it is possible to earn a B (up to 85%) on this assignment by using only three sources from the course readings and no reference page. To earn an A (up to 100%) will require an additional two sources and reference page, if needed.
    Format and Length

  • “Improving Decision Making and Problem Solving in Organizations: The Importance of Accurate Framing and Mapping Techniques” “Improving Interdisciplinary Collaboration through Process Mapping and Staff Input: A Case Study of Huddle at St. Mary’s Medical Center”

    Original instructions
Discuss a problem your current or former organization (pseudonyms are okay) solved or a suboptimal decision the organization made because the frame was incorrect. Describe the outcome(s) that resulted due to the incorrect framing. What barriers to brilliant decision making do you believe impacted the organization and why? Describe how you would have framed the problem and what mapping technique you would have used. NOTE: You do NOT have to create the mapping technique. You only have to explain why you chose it.
Students are reminded to follow the discussion board guidelines and rubric criteria as outlined below:
Respond to the following discussion post adding value to the conversation and each post should consist of 150 words minimum
    Claudette post
In the context of organizational problem-solving and decision-making, inaccurate framing can, indeed, result in undesirable choices and consequences. TechGenix, a fictitious company, as an instance, which experienced a significant drop in employee productivity. A thorough performance monitoring system was put in place as a result of the first conceptualization of the problem, which was that staff were not motivated enough. But this strategy did nothing but make people more stressed out and less productive. Low morale and a high turnover rate were the results, which suggests that the problem was not properly defined.  A more effective framing of the problem would have involved a broader perspective, taking into account factors like work environment, job design, and employee well-being (Olson et al., 2022).
I would have chosen to use a cross-functional process map to frame the problem, which would allow for a visualization of the workflow across different departments, identifying obstacles and areas of stress that could be contributing to the drop in productivity (Olson et al., 2022). It would also highlight the transitions between departments, which are particularly important in this situation. Confirmation bias, where the management only considered evidence that supported their initial assumption, and overconfidence, assuming they already had the right solution (Dierickx, 2020)
Instead of blaming the problem only on low employee motivation, the company might have used a cross-functional process map to pinpoint particular workflow areas that needed to be improved, such distributing responsibilities or simplifying communication (Dierickx, 2020). This strategy probably would have produced more focused and efficient solutions, raising output and raising employee satisfaction.  The secret to effectively framing a problem is to be receptive to other viewpoints and conduct a comprehensive analysis of the circumstance before drawing any judgments (Olson et al., 2022). To determine the genuine nature of the issue at hand, it is important to pose the appropriate questions and be prepared to challenge presumptions.

The healthcare field is a constant evolving and changing environment in order to help reduce barriers and improve patient care. Revisions in the process due to incorrect framework or an attempt to improve the framework that is already in place. St. Mary’s Medical Center has a daily huddle meeting at noon to go over each patient on the unit and the barriers for remaining hospitalized. The idea of a huddle is to address barriers is essential and helps with communication throughout the multidisciplinary team. However, the only team members at huddle were the nurses, charge nurse and case managers. The base idea of a daily huddle is important but there was previously very little communication with the remaining multidisciplinary team. Research shows “Nurses and physicians collaborating between departments determined the plan of action for the day to ensure efficient and timely care was provided to all pediatric patients within the hospital and those needing to be transferred from other facilities.” (McBeth et al., 2017) Due to the incorrect framing the outcomes of the huddle resulted in continued lack of communication between the multidisciplinary team.
To improve upon the idea of huddle, hospital leadership revisited huddle and made it mandatory for all members of the multidisciplinary team to be involved. Hospitalists, nurses, charge nurses, nurse managers, case managers and a representative from administration were all in attendance to address each patient and their barriers to discharge to the appropriate next level of care. The barriers to brilliant decision making that impacted St. Mary’s Medical Center as an organization is the members in attendance at huddle. If the hospitalist team was not in attendance there was not a real-time accurate report of patient barriers for discharge. Alternate barriers included communication within the multidisciplinary team. Research has shown “Strong and committed leadership is a key contributory factor is sustaining commitment to the huddle.” (Montague et al., 2019)
If I was employed in a hospital leadership position and involved in the improvement of huddle at St. Mary’s Medical Center, I would have implemented more research prior to interventions. First, I would’ve visited different units of the hospital and watched as huddle was performed. I would have interviewed nurses, charge nurses and case management to gather a consensus of what is and is not working. After that, I would have asked the staff what they would find more helpful from the huddle meetings. I would have used the mapping technique of a process flow chart to help with visualization of the huddle process. A process flowchart would be beneficial to visual how huddle meeting can have all members of the multidisciplinary team engage and help with hand-off between different team members. Therefore, the process flowchart would show a visual representation of the huddle process from start to finish.

During the speech, Dr. King addressed an action that could impact several businesses, the local economy, and the direction of the nation.
    In your post,
Explain how the speech reflects leading through hard times while providing a defining vision for followers.
What were the conditions at the time impacting his leadership ability?
What direction could current leaders take from the speech to address the present and the future success of a strategy, movement, vision, or the success of an organization?
Your discussion post should be 250 words.

    Hello Classmates,
Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech reflects leading through hard times while providing a defining vision for followers by supporting black workers over discriminatory and unsafe conditions during a time of violence and racism. In this time of injustice, Martin Luther King Jr. talks to his followers about biblical stories of Hebrews and walks them through tough situations. He urges nonviolent protest because he believes black people are not interested in negative protest and arguments. These instances of window breaking should not be their priority. He explained he had vision to his followers. “And I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land!” (King 1968). This was a vision that explained they should stay together because unity helps create a collective voice against injustice.
The conditions were harsh at the time and negatively impacted King’s leadership ability. People were suffering and starving from poor working conditions. In addition, protestors have been sprayed by water hoses. Those who remained after the crowd dispersion were arrested. These conditions injected fear, uncertainty, and doubt into his followers and made it more difficult for Martin Luther King Jr. to lead them.
Current leaders could take some directions from the speech to address the present and the future success of a strategy, movement, vision or the success of an organization. One takeaway is to always stand firm with a clear vision. As long as the team has a clear vision for an organization, they will know their current actions have purpose. Another takeaway is to remain calm in front of fear and inspire the team. Like King during his speech, having a leader who is unafraid will help the team remain confident during tough times. The head of the spear needs to stay sharp and lead the way, uninterrupted by outside forces. One last takeaway from King’s speech is to urge for a nonviolent method. This maintains ethics and leadership within the team. Having morals is important for leaders because it separates those who prioritize self-interest and those who prioritize utilitarianism. The best solution for a member may not be the best solution for the whole organization.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” is a powerful example of leading through tough times and inspiring people with a clear vision. He addressed the struggles of African Americans, especially the Memphis sanitation workers, and called for boycotts against businesses that did not support workers’ rights. Despite facing violent opposition, economic hardship, and internal divisions within the Civil Rights Movement, he emphasized unity and nonviolence. The speech reflects his ability to provide hope and direction during challenging times. He recognized the immediate struggles while inspiring his audience to envision a brighter future. Significant resistance to the Civil Rights Movement existed, including violent opposition from institutional forces and individuals against racial equality. Despite these challenges, Dr. King remained steadfast, using his platform to call for unity and perseverance.
Today’s leaders can draw several lessons from Dr. King’s speech to address challenges. Leaders should clearly communicate their vision and the steps needed to achieve it, much like Dr. King’s focus on economic justice and nonviolent protest. Emphasizing the power of collective action can move followers toward a common goal, as seen in Dr. King’s call for boycotts that united the community in a shared cause. Balancing the immediate concerns of followers while keeping sight of long-term objectives is important, and demonstrating courage and resolve in the face of opposition can inspire and strengthen followers’ commitment to the cause. His ability to lead through difficult times by providing a defining vision continues to offer good insights for leaders striving to effect change and guide their organizations toward success.
