Before responding to this forum, you should read the following information from the textbook: Section 6-6c (p.168) “DO PEOPLE REALLY RECOVER REPRESSED MEMORIES FROM CHILDHOOD?” and the page titled “CAN WE TRUST EYEWITNESS TESTIMONY?” from Section 6-6d (p.169).
You should also watch the video on the North Carolina case when eyewitness testimony failed. The link is located just above the link for this forum. There are two parts to the video. Once the first part ends it should take you directly to the second part.
Once you have read the material from chapter 6 in the textbook and watched the two parts of the video, you should respond to the following questions.
1. Based on your reading and viewing of the video, discuss some of the reasons why this might have happened? Discuss some specific things from the case that might have led to the incorrect memory.
2. Does it surprise you that memory can be so unreliable at times? Explain
3. Based on what you saw and heard on the video, as well as what you read in the textbook, respond to the following: Many people assume that if a person is confident about their memory of an event, then it means that their memory is probably accurate. Does the research and information from the video support this? What are your thoughts on this?
