Several concepts form the basis for viewing social diversity.  Explain in detail what is meant by minority and dominant groups, and the significance of prejudice, discrimination, ideological racism and institutional discrimination.  What is the most important concept in understanding social diversity?  Explain how these concepts have or have not affected you personally or people you know.
America is often viewed as a “melting pot”.  What is assimilation, explain the 3 Sociological perspectives of assimilation, and the importance and variations in assimilation.  What is pluralism and what is the difference between cultural pluralism, structural pluralism, and integration without pluralism.  Do you think that America is a melting pot, a salad bowl or a mosaic?  Explain how these concepts have or have not affected you personally or people you know
Prejudice has been a part of American society since its beginnings.  Discuss in detail the 2 personality based theories and the 3 culture based theories of prejudice.  Which theory (or theories) best explain prejudice.  Explain how prejudice and discrimination have or have not affected you or other people you know.    
We have explored the origins and evolution of minority-dominant group relations in the U.S.  Explain how the origins of slavery in the U.S., the Noel hypothesis and the Blauner hypothesis explain the contact and relations between African Americans and Whites in the U.S.  Also, what is the impact of industrialization and the post-industrial society on the relations between minorities and the dominant group in the U.S.?
