Concept essay (2-3 pages in length) Your supervisor asks you to volunteer for a task force to improve the quality of care for pulmonary patients. The physician leading the task force does not like Respiratory Therapists and usually refers to you and your colleagues as “just RTs.” Write a concept essay about any aspect of Respiratory Care to highlight your value to the team. This essay could be about a pulmonary disease, mechanical ventilation, patient assessment, etc. The goal is to demonstrate what you can bring to the group by communicating your knowledge effectively and professionally. Include in your essay:
An introduction – which introduces the topic AND explains why some might hesitate to include RTs in a task force.
The body – which explains the concept.
The conclusion reiterates the topic’s key points and WHY you should be a part of the task force.
Requirements:
Although there are several different types of essays, all essays follow the same, three-part model: Introduction, Body, and Conclusion
Introduction (Tell the audience what you are going to say): The introduction introduces the topic you will be discussing and must include a thesis statement – one sentence that encapsulates the central theme. The introduction provides background and should grab the attention of the reader.
Body (Say it): The body of the essay tells everything you want to say about the topic. This section comprises the largest portion of the essay. The type of essay will dictate the content. In this section you provide the information, evidence, benefits, burdens, etc.
Conclusion (Tell the audience what you said): The conclusion ties everything together and returns your audience back to your thesis statement. Do not include any new information in the conclusion and do not use phrases such as, “In conclusion…” or “To sum up…” End the paper with a sentence or two that might leave a strong impression on the reader.
