The Research Essay will be 3-5 typed pages, not including a title page and a page for references.  Students must format and reference their work using APA style and reference a minimum of four academic sources.  The essay should contain an introductory paragraph that introduces the topic, identifies the focus or purpose, outlines the main topics, and contains a thesis statement. Body paragraphs should possess topic sentences, supporting details, and a concluding sentence. The concluding paragraph should re-state the thesis and summarize the main argument. While there will be no rubric for this assignment, here are some basic guidelines explaining the grading requirements.

In order to receive an average grade on this assignment, students will be required to submit a paper that has all of the basic necessities. The content and length of the paper must meet the criteria outlined above including the four academic sources that must be properly referenced.  The proper essay format should be followed. Introductory, body, and concluding paragraphs should be easily recognizable. Solid statements and proper support must be used to express yourself.  It is important that the grammar and spelling is good and that there are no glaring errors as a result of a poorly prepared assignment. 
In order to receive a top grade on this assignment, students are required to meet all the criteria stated above for an average grade.  In addition, they must submit a paper that has very few or no grammatical and / or typing errors.  Smooth transitions from paragraph to paragraph and within paragraphs is essential. The paper must be clear and concise, well organized, and all information should be very well-supported. Students seeking top grades will also need to display superior writing skills that includes a good variety of descriptive language and demonstrate a high level of academic professionalism. Sources must be referenced properly and formally using the APA format.  Students also need to do a very good job of expressing their own views on the subject and supporting those views well.
