In 1910, the Mexican Revolution swept away the old order and ushered new ideas, rights, economic models, and systems of governance. This event marked the beginning of a sea-change in Latin America itself, as countries across the region from Argentina to Cuba experienced popular challenges that attempted to reframe the relationship between citizen and democracy, wealth, and sovereignty.  Yet these popular challenges also sparked intense backlash and fears of exclusion, leading to dictatorships, terror, campaigns and civil wars.
