Hello class,
Personal knowing, derived from personal experiences, emotions, and intuition, is crucial in nursing practice for fostering human connection with patients and providing holistic care that considers their unique needs and wants. One formal expression of personal knowing is the genuine Self (Chinn, 2018).
My personal knowing greatly influences my personal and professional development as a nurse. As someone who values empathy and compassion, my personal knowing allows me to connect with my patients on a deeper level and understand their fears, anxieties, and hopes. This helps me provide care that is not only medically correct, but also emotionally supportive and comforting.
One of my professional strengths as a nurse is my ability to communicate effectively with patients and their situations. I am able to listen, ask questions, and provide information in a way that is easy for them to understand. Another strength is my ability to remain calm and composed in high-stress situations, which helps me provide quality care even under pressure.
One of my weaknesses is my tendency to be overly self-critical and perfectionistic. This can sometimes lead to feelings of burnout and exhaustion, as I constantly push myself to meet certain expectations. Another weakness is my occasional struggle to set boundaries with difficult patients, which can sometimes result in emotional drain and frustration.
To improve my nursing skills, I can apply self-care, stress management techniques, realistic goals, assertiveness, and communication skills. I can also enhance my therapeutic communication and empathy skills to provide patient-centered care. I can also seek professional development opportunities to enhance my communication and emotional intelligence.
