Exploring the Social Context of American Art: A Comparative Analysis of Objects and Themes

Short answer 6 
These questions are designed to demonstrate your knowledge of the social context for the production and reception of individual works of art. For each question, you will be given an image of an object and a prompt to guide your discussion. In 5-8 sentences, you should respond to the prompt with an answer that connects the physical form of the work to the social context in which it was created and/or used.
Object comparison 2 
These questions are designed to help you synthesize your knowledge of individual objects into a broader narrative of American art. For each question, you will be given a pair of images to compare and contrast, as well as a prompt to guide your discussion. In 2-3 paragraphs, you should respond to the prompt with an answer that identifies both similarities and differences between the two works and connects those similarities and differences to the social contexts in which each work was created.
Comprehensive essay 1 
This question is designed to demonstrate your ability to connect individual objects within a broad chronological and thematic narrative. You will need to identify the various objects and the social context of their production and then connect these objects in relation to a broader theme from the course. I have offered two possible essay topics. Please choose just one. Remember, an “A” essay will include:
An introduction that clearly outlines your argument for the essay and the approach you plan to take
A combination of both visual description and contextual analysis for each object
Attention to both similarities and differences between the various objects
A conclusion that summarizes your argument and overarching perspective on the essay topic
