“Comedy as a Tool for Social Commentary”

Image Above: Stand up Comedy is a forum of expression, entertainment, but it’s also a forum of discussion of the toughest topics in our world.
Welcome to your last assignment! We have discussed a historical trajectory of injustice and violence perpetrated against people of color: Native Americans, African/ African Americans, Chicana/o/x members, and Asian/Asian Americans.  I wanted to offer you an opportunity to think about how stand-up comedy allows us, especially in the US, to regard the topics that we’ve engaged throughout the semester.  Therefore, I have chosen to divide this last assignment into TWO parts.
Part One: “Life is a Comedy” (10 points)
For the first part of this assignment, I’m asking you to please check out stand-up comedy on YouTube.  I want you to provide me with FOUR segments (not an entire show) from comedians that represent the different groups discussed in class (Native Americans, African/ African Americans, Chicana/o/x members, and Asian/Asian Americans)  that discuss any of the following topics: race, ethnicity, gender/sexuality, class, nationalism, immigration.  I will give you an opportunity to do the research and what you will submit are 4 stand-up comedy bits (title of the video and the link).
Part Two: Let’s Dissect that Stand-up Bit! (40 points)
Here we go! So for each bit that you have provided me, I want you to discuss how each bit is supported and/or reflected by what we’ve discussed in class.  In other words, I want you to connect at least FOUR sources per comedy bit.
ONE of the sources MUST be from your lecture notes (leaving you to choose 3 other sources).  Keep in mind that if you point to my PowerPoint, it’s part of the lecture notes, though by no means a “complete” sentence to what has been discussed in class. Please cite your notes as follows:
(Hortua Lecture, Date of lecture)
Your other THREE sources MUST come from what has been provided in class ONLY: primary sources, videos, textbook/s, etc.
Rewind/Review: You will analyze ONE comedy bit for each group (Native Americans, African/ African Americans, Chicana/o/x members, and Asian/Asian Americans), and then use FOUR course sources provided from our class (One source MUST be your class notes) and then you will break down how each comedy bit is supported and/or reflected in our course materials and discussions.
How long does this have to be? For Part 2, I’m looking that you provide a 1.5 pages for each group. (4 groups; 6 pages).
Points: 50 (10 points/40 points)
