Social
workers must demonstrate empathy and learn how to
identify areas for self-improvement when building relational rapport with
diverse individuals. When working with clients, social workers will regularly
discuss their approaches with supervisors to improve their self-awareness and refine
their strategies for engaging with others.
Using scenario 2, explain the importance of empathy when
engaging with clients in a report of 525 words as if you were a social worker
discussing your skills with a supervisor:
Describe the situation and explain why it may be
personally challenging for you. Summarize NASW standards and expectations
for social workers’ interpersonal skills to show empathy while engaging
with clients in this situation.
Summarize potential risks to the helping
relationship if clients suspect that their social worker lacks empathy for
their situation. Describe potential conflicts that could occur between the
client’s beliefs and the belief systems they might encounter while
receiving social services. Explain how you might prevent such conflict.
Explain how you will ensure that the helping
relationship is not affected by your personal challenge. Describe at least
3 specific interpersonal skills that you would use to engage with the
client in this situation and convey empathy at the professional level
required of social workers. Identify the materials used for each
interpersonal skill.
Reflect on your capacity for showing empathy to
diverse clients and explain how you would monitor your language and
behavior with clients as a social worker.
